Maine girl bouncing back after 6-organ transplant (AP)

HOLLIS, Maine ? A 9-year-old Maine girl is home from a Boston hospital healthy, active and with high hopes ? and a new stomach, liver, spleen, small intestine, pancreas, and part of an esophagus to replace the ones that were being choked by a huge tumor.

It's believed to be the first-ever transplant of an esophagus and the largest number of organs transplanted at one time in New England.

Spunky and bright-eyed as she scampered around her family's farmhouse outside Portland, Alannah Shevenell said Thursday that she's glad to be feeling well again and able to go sledding, make a snowman, work on her scrapbooks and give her grandmother a little good-humored sass.

The best part, though? "Being home," she said. "Just being home."

It was 2008 when Alannah, then 5, began running a fever and losing weight while her belly swelled. Doctors discovered the tumor that year and twice attempted to remove it, as it made its way like octopus legs from organ to organ. But it was difficult to access what turned out to be a rare form of sarcoma, said Debi Skolas, Alannah's grandmother, and chemotherapy didn't do the trick, either.

All the time, the growth ? known as an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor ? continued to grow in her abdomen, causing pain, making it hard to eat and swelling her up with fluid. Surgery was the last resort to save her life, and Alannah spent more than a year on a waiting list for the organs, said Dr. Heung Bae Kim, the lead surgeon on the procedure at Children's Hospital Boston.

The family was told there was a 50 percent chance Alannah wouldn't survive the procedure. But without it, she had no chance whatsoever.

Things were more tense than celebratory in October when doctors prepared to remove the growth and the organs in one fell swoop and replace them with organs transplanted in one tangled piece from another child of similar size.

The hardest part was taking out her organs and the tumor, Kim said, calling it a difficult operation with lots of blood loss.

"It's probably one of the most extensive tumor removals ever done," the surgeon said.

Dr. Allan Kirk, professor of surgery at Emory University in Atlanta and the editor-in-chief of The American Journal of Transplantation, said no other esophageal transplant has been reported in medical literature.

After the surgery, Alannah spent three more months at the hospital, with her grandmother sleeping every night in a lounge chair by her bed. She battled infections and complications from the surgery before finally being given the OK to leave.

She arrived back home Wednesday in the 192-year-old house on a country road where she lives with her grandmother and grandfather, Jamie Skolas, in Hollis, a town of 4,500 residents about 20 miles west of Portland.

But just because she's home doesn't mean she's out of the woods. Alannah has to take nine medications each day, some two, three or four times. Her grandparents have to precisely measure what goes in and comes out of her body, and check her blood sugar.

She has an ostomy pouch and feeding tube attached to her for nutrition as she slowly gets used to eating again. Scars from her surgeries look like a roadmap on her stomach. A tutor comes to the home 20 hours a week for her schooling.

Her immune system is so weak that she can't go to places with large numbers of other people, such as school, church or a mall. She can't eat raw vegetables or fruits unless they have thick skins because of concerns over germs, and she'll never be able to swim in a lake because of the bacteria. The Skolases installed ultraviolet lights in their heating ducts to kill mold, mildew and bacteria that might sicken Alannah.

Alannah is aware of her limitations and what she's been through. "Don't even ask," she says when the subject of the medical costs, which have been covered by MaineCare ? Maine's version of Medicaid ? come up.

She's talkative and enjoys bantering with her grandparents.

"Grammy, you're not always right," she said to end a conversation.

The Skolases, who took Alannah in several years ago but declined to discuss the whereabouts of her parents, have made sacrifices for her through the years. Their hand-crafted-furniture business has suffered, with Debi devoting her time to care for Alannah, and the couple has dipped into retirement savings to make ends meet.

Friends have organized a fundraiser to help raise money to offset the costs.

More than anything, though, the family is thankful for the girl's second chance at life and to the family that went through the pain of losing a child and before deciding to donate the organs to help Alannah.

"That was a courageous decision," Debi Skolas said. "I still cry when I think about it."

Laptops to boost Barbuda's ICT programme | Antigua Observer ...

The Ministry of Information, Broadcasting, Telecommunications, Science and Technology in partnership with telecommunications company LIME launched the Technology for Education 20/20 programme in Barbuda on Wednesday.

St. John?s Antigua- Principal of the Sir McChesney George Secondary School John Mussington said high speed laptops presented on Wednesday to teachers will bolster the school?s information communication technology programme.

The 15 on-staff teachers at the secondary school were among the 38 who received the laptops under the Technology for Education 20/20 programme backed by government and telecoms company LIME. The other beneficiaries are from the Holy Trinity Primary School.

Mussington, who was among those who addressed the ceremony where the programme was launched, explained its significance at the school that has 112 students.

?What it means is that teachers in Barbuda are now on board and so they will be able to gain the tools and the skills necessary for them to deliver the curriculum,? he told The Daily OBSERVER.

?What has to be noted is that the responsibility is ours as teachers to train the upcoming generation and prepare them for the information age and we can only do so if we ourselves are on the cutting edge, as it were, and we are well equipped to be able to pass on that knowledge.?

The Technology for Education programme has three components ? high-speed laptops for 1600 teachers at 86 public and private primary and secondary schools, broadband Internet connectivity at their homes at a special rate and broadband Internet hotspots in 22 secondary schools.

Just over a thousand laptops have been distributed to teachers in Antigua so far since the 2011 launch.

AOL's Huff Post to launch live streaming network

(AP) ? AOL and the Huffington Post are launching a live video network that aims to combine broadcast news with social media.

The Huffington Post Streaming Network was previewed Thursday at AOL's Manhattan headquarters. The online network will launch this summer, streaming news video live 12 hours a day on weekdays, expanding to 16 hours a day next year.

The Huffington Post, which AOL purchased for $315 million a year ago, is dedicating 100 employees to the project. It will be webcast from studios in New York and Los Angeles, as well a satellite studio in Washington.

Huffington Post founding editor Roy Sekoff, who will head the network, declined to say how much AOL is spending, but called it a "substantial investment." He likened the network to a "never-ending talk show" that will "mirror the Internet experience."

On Wednesday, AOL Inc. reported sharply lower fourth-quarter net income, but a rise of 10 percent in ad revenue. In shifting from the obsolete business of dial-up Internet to a contemporary media company, AOL has sought to invest in the content business, a philosophy AOL CEO Tim Armstrong reiterated Thursday.

Armstrong called the launching of the HPSN, as the network is referred to in short, to a bigger "bet" for AOL than its purchase of the Huffington Post. He called the network "a game-changing type idea."

Arianna Huffington, head of the Huffington Post Media Group, seconded that hyperbole, calling the network "truly groundbreaking."

Other digital media outlets have turned to live video to expand beyond text reporting. Most notably, The Wall Street Journal launched its first live online program in 2008 and is currently producing about four hours of live video on weekdays for WSJ.com.

Sekoff called the WSJ project "fine" but said the much-commenting Huffington Post community will differentiate its network.

"No offense to the Wall Street Journal, but I think we got more comments this month than the Wall Street Journal got last year," said Sekoff.

The Journal declined to comment.

As previewed, HPSN will rely heavily on interaction with its viewers. A computer screen of the network will have about a third of its picture dedicated to community, Facebook and Twitter commenting. Reports and interviews will be interrupted with news read off of social media, and commenters will also be invited to be guests via Skype. A clickable banner of headlines will scroll across the bottom of the screen.

"People don't want to have you tell them the news anymore," said Sekoff. "They don't want to be talked to, they want to be talked with."

AOL said it's currently reaching out to advertisers that it will sell pre-roll ads for its on-demand videos, on-screen graphics and integrated sponsorship in news segments. One demo showed a feature on the experience of driving a Lexus.

The network won't have time-scheduled programs, but overlap topics to reflect the "controlled chaos" of the Web, said Sekoff. He hopes the network will produce 30,000 clips in its first year.

The network will draw its reporting from the Huffington Post's newsroom, as well as those of other AOL properties, including Patch, Techcrunch and Engadget. It also plans to launch on devices that connect to TVs, like Roku and PlayStation sets.

http://otcpicknews.com/emailmarketer/link.phpM940&N95&L57&F=T Colorado Goldfields Inc. is a Denver-based junior exploration and mining company primarily exploring for gold and silver. Our seasoned management team targets historic gold camps with strong potential for multiple deposit discoveries. Currently, our business model in Colorado provides an outstanding combination of former producing properties with excellent exploration and production potential and a currently inactive, modern, up to 700 ton per day capacity mill facility to allow for an attractive short-term production time frame. We expect that this strategic plan will allow Colorado Goldfields to reach its goal of profitability, potentially within the next 18 months. CGFIA News:December 21 - Colorado Goldfields Inc. Convenes Summit With Senior Consulting Engineering Team; Sets Final Design Completion Date of January 15, 2012Colorado Goldfields Inc.`s (OTC: CGFIA) Special Consulting Engineer, Stephen C. Fearn recently talked with engineer Wayne Dale, who is completing the final piece of the Company`s upcoming reclamation permit amendment submission to the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Ming and Safety ("Division").Mr. Fearn: What work is required to complete the design of the Dry Stack Tailings RepositoryMr. Dale: The Avalanche Study has been completed and with the completion of the Avalanche study new design considerations were identified which are now being addressed. We now need to finish the design of the containment system. With the completed design of the containment system we will address the issues necessary to assure the Division of the stability of the tailings repository during the different stages of tailings placement and for final site closure. This will be addressed by the results of the seismic study which is currently in progress. The last phase of the containment design will incorporate features in the embankment design to ensure protection from the 100 year flood event.Mr. Fearn: What is the initial designed size and capacity of the dry stack repositoryMr. Dale: The initial design capacity of the first cell is approximately 100,000 tons. The expected capacity of the first unit (cells 1 and 2) will be approximately 250,000 tons. The first cell will be approximately 200 feet wide and 500 feet long. The second cell will be approximately 200 feet wide and 400 feet long. After completion of cells 1 and 2, additional tailings will be placed into the volume between the two cells. This develops approximately 7 acres of the 35 acre repository site.Mr. Fearn: Why is it important and what problems do we avoid by completing each of these items prior to submitting the permit amendment applicationMr. Dale: The most important thing to do is submit the most complete and detailed Permit Amendment to the Division for their review. This will allow the Division to do a onetime comprehensive review of the amendment, rather than having to pass-through the entire submittal multiple times. This has been a common mistake in the past.Mr. Fearn: What is the schedule for completion of these items and is their completion interdependentMr. Dale: With the completion of the avalanche study, all inter-dependencies have been removed. We estimate that the final design for inclusion in the permit amendment application will be completed by January 15, 2012.Mr. Fearn: How does providing a complete design to the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety with the Permit Amendment Application reduce the time required for Permit ApprovalMr. Dale: One of the reasons that permitting can take so long (as we`ve seen with other operators in the area), is that designs are submitted on a conceptual level with references to "further detailed analysis later." All this does is slow the evaluation process. A one-time comprehensive review will eliminate multiple submittals, which are in the form of answers to "adequacy issues." Each one of those can add weeks to approval process. We are going to avoid that.Mr. Fearn: How is the current dry stack design providing superior protection to the environment And does it provide better utilization of the overall repository site than in the original proposed designMr. Dale: The new design will demonstrate to the Division that Colorado Goldfields is concerned for the protection of the environment by: 1) Protecting the Animas River from the potential of an accidental spill and the resulting degradation of water quality by contaminants; 2) Protecting the construction site from precipitation on the tailings pile during placement of the tailings; and, 3) Placing a protective cap over the dry-stacked tailings at the completion of each major section of the repository, minimizing the additional work required for final reclamation when the milling process is completed and the site is closed. The new design will provide for better utilization of the site by increasing the individual cell capacity and reducing the number of individual cells. More site volume can be utilized for mill tailings disposal and less borrow material and construction time will be required in the construction of perimeter berms.CAMBRIAN SYSTEMS INCORPORATED (OTC: CAMS) "Up 100.00% on Wednesday" Detailed Quote:

Cos? also stated that system-wide comparable sales to date for the first quarter of 2012 are consistent with the comparable sales results achieved for the fourth quarter."I was pleased to see the positive system-wide comparable sales trend Cos? achieved in the fourth quarter culminating with an 8.2% increase in December," said Carin Stutz, Cos?`s President and Chief Executive Officer.

"This sales performance only reinforces my confidence in the long term potential of this great brand."Company-owned net restaurant sales increased by $701,000 to $25,334,000 for the 2011 fourth quarter compared to $24,633,000 for the 2010 fourth quarter. The increase over last year`s quarter was largely due to $1,375,000 of sales related to the extra week of sales in the 2011 fourth quarter (14 weeks versus 13 weeks) partially offset by sales related to several locations closed during and subsequent to the fourth quarter of 2010. Franchise fees and royalty revenues for the fourth quarter contributed $859,000 compared to $723,000 in the 2010 fourth quarter. The increase in royalties in the 2011 fourth quarter over last year`s quarter was due primarily to higher sales as well as royalties related to the extra week of sales in the 2011 fourth quarter.Cos? noted that the 2011 fiscal year included 53 weeks, 14 weeks in the fourth quarter, versus the 2010 fiscal year which included 52 weeks, 13 weeks in the fourth quarter.Company-owned comparable sales are based on sales from restaurants that have been operating as Cos? for more than 15 months. Recreation & Sport: The Joy of Fly Fishing in New Brunswick

Owning a boat comes with the added responsibility of maintenance and upkeep. Practicing some preventive maintenance now can save you from having to shell out a lot of money later when your neglect catches up to you.

casey checking his boat over
Casey Looking Over His Boat To See That's All's Well

Casey takes great care of his boat, motor and trailer, hey it's part of the family. There is always a double check before launching and again before leaving.

1. Complete Basic Cleaning After Every Trip

Your boat will look and work its best if you do a few things every time you take it out. If you are a saltwater fisherman, you need to rinse your boat's motor with fresh water every time you bring it home from a fishing trip. Hose down the outside of the boat with fresh water. This will keep the salt from building up and getting caught in your motor or ruining your paint job. Wipe up any spills inside and put away your supplies, so your boat is tidy and ready for your next trip.

2. Clean The Fuel Tank

Although it is not the prettiest job, cleaning your boat's fuel tank periodically is important to prevent fuel clogs. Take out the fuel hose and put a clear hose of the same diameter into the hole. After removing the gas cap, position an air compressor in the opening and use it to drive all of the gas and gunk through your clear hose into a bucket. Pour three gallons of gas into the tank and repeat the process to make sure you flush everything out before putting your fuel hose back in and refilling the tank.

3. Perform Regular Visual Inspections

If you know how your boat is supposed to look when everything is working right, you will be able to notice any small problems just by performing quick visual inspections on a regular basis. Look through every part of your boat, keeping an eye out for chipped materials, fraying ropes, loose fittings, and anything else out of the ordinary that needs fixing.

4. Check Your Battery

If you rely on a battery to start your boat, check it regularly to ensure it is in good working condition. Charge the battery whenever you notice it is getting low, so you won?t get stuck out in the water if it dies. Check the fluid levels as well, and keep the battery clean and dry for top performance.

5. Clean Your Boat Thoroughly Before Winter

Although it seems counterproductive because you won't actually be using your boat for several months, it is important to clean your boat before you store it for the winter. This keeps the dirt and grime from settling onto the boat during the winter and allows you to just do a quick clean before taking it out for the first time next spring. In addition, fill your gas tank completely before storing it for the winter. After readying your boat, take it out of the water and store it in a climate-controlled environment for the winter.

By being proactive, your boat will last longer and be more likely to run smoothly when you take it out. In addition, if you are new to boat ownership and unsure about the mechanics, take your boat to a professional at least once a year for an inspection and to get recommendations on maintenance.

Daniel Radcliffe Talks The Woman in Black

Daniel Radcliffe seems content with, as he puts it, the fading "hoopla" that surrounded playing Harry Potter for ten years. "If that steadily decreases for the rest of my life, I'll be kind of cool with that," Radcliffe admitted on the eve of the release "The Woman in Black," his first post-Potter film project. Considering his fame -- primarily fueled from playing Potter in eight separate films -- the 22-year-old actor is surprisingly self-aware.

Radcliffe realizes his current place in movie stardom. He knows that his "cachet" (again, as he puts it) will not last forever, nor do I get the impression that he wants it to last forever. Actually, from the time we spent together, I did get a vibe from Radcliffe that almost cried, "the sooner, the better." Put it this way: when searching for an apt metaphor to describe fame and fortune, Radcliffe compared it to regurgitated steak.

In "The Woman in Black" Radcliffe plays Arthur Kipp, a lawyer who discovers deep, dark secrets in a town inhabited by a seemingly child-killing ghost. An open and honest Radcliffe discussed the importance of his first post-Potter role, why he would not play another character named "Harry," and what he won't miss about the fame that came along with being Harry Potter.

They didn't screen the film for me before this interview.
I'm sorry.

I've seen the trailer. In the time we have, you could act out every scene that I've seen five times.
That's absolutely true! Yes! And it would be a lot of the same face that's in the trailer.

So you're 22 now, right?
Yes.

You do look a little older in "The Woman in Black" than what we're used to seeing.
Good.

Is that important to you?
Yep.

Why?
In the original script he's about 27. I think I could conceivably play 24 or 25 with a little bit of stubble. Also, in all of those clothes, that makes you look slightly older because you hold yourself differently. So, yeah, we were picturing him at about 24 or 25, with a 4-year old son.

Did you read the book?
Yes. I've read the book, but I've never seen the play. Weirdly, because I never really was at school -- because the play seems to be like a "school trip" play for everybody I know -- I never went to see it because I was doing "Potter." But I hear it's terrifying -- as it should be.

It would be odd if you said, "I've heard that it's hilarious."
[Laughs] Yeah, well that's the thing: the movie is very different than the book and very different than the play. And the book is different than the play. So, you know, we've all taken liberties. The original book is told in the past -- it's flashback from my character as an old man -- and that's not what it is in the film. In the film it all takes place in the present time. It's basically the idea for "The Woman in Black," the village and the tone of the book, and changed details of the story.

What if the main character's first name in this story was Harry instead of Arthur? Maybe that's a stupid question...
No, it's not stupid at all.

Would you have asked to have it changed?
Yeah, I think I might.

That's interesting.
I don't know. I think I might. It would be more of a problem if the character's name was Potter. That would be worse. But, I don't know. Maybe. On "My Boy Jack," they came to me with glasses and I was like, "Whoa, not those ones." But, yes, it's not a stupid question; it's quite an interesting one. Yeah, I think I might have asked for that to be changed. I'm not sure. I don't know how I would have felt about that. But, yeah, there's also another weird "Potter" connection with this: the guy who played my dad in "Potter" played my character in the original TV film of "The Woman in Black." So there's a few little weird "Potter" connections. But, then again, "Potter" is connected to everything. It's no no longer even a coincidence. It's just inevitable.

This is your first big film role post-"Potter." How important is this movie to you?
It's important, but it's not the be-all and end-all, that's the thing. Like, people keep saying, "Oh, it's Daniel Radciffe's first film post-"Harry Potter," let's see how he does."

I don't even necessarily mean it like that. Do you feel you need to separate yourself from what you're currently known for?
Yes. But I think it's a longer... I think to put all of that pressure on one film would be ridiculous. I think, because not everyone is going to see this. A lot of people will, hopefully, but not everyone. And, also, I made peace a long time ago with the fans. There will be people who forever see me as Harry. That's fine as long as they're not controlling a casting racket in L.A., then we'll be fine. For this film, what's great about it and what's kind of perfect is that the part is different: it's older, it's playing a father. There are challenges there; stuff that will physically separate me from Harry in people's minds. But there's also the story is so compelling that after about 10 or 15 minutes of watching the film, you're going to stop thinking about me or what else I've done and just be into the film. Because it's a really brilliant story. So that's why it's kind of perfect as a first film outside of it. Because even though I'm the only "name above the title" kind of thing, once you're in there, it's not about me. it's about the story and the need to know what's going to happen. So, hopefully that will overtake.

Will you miss all the commotion that came with Harry Potter? If I were you, I can't decide if I'd miss it or not.
[Pauses] Hm...

Not the people that you worked with...
No, no, no... the fame and the circus and the hoopla...

"Hoopla." That's the word I'm looking for.
No, I don't miss the hoopla. I don't think, particularly. I'm quite happy. If I have passed my most famous point, I won't be unhappy. Like, that's OK. If, say, around the time of "Potter 7" coming out, my face is all over the world, and all of that stuff is going on at that time and all of that madness -- if that steadily decreases for the rest of my life, I'll be kind of cool with that. I had a good dose of it for 10 years. You know, I'm now content to just make my way and do a lot of films that I find interesting. There is the fight, then, is that in order to keep being able to do interesting little things, you have to do that George Clooney thing of doing a big movie like an "Oceans 11" -- which are still very good movies -- so that you can go off and do "Syriana" or "Good Night and Good Luck," or whatever. So I suppose that's the challenge in the future. For now, I still have "Potter" behind me and people still associate me with this big thing. So, while my name has some cachet, I guess...

It does.
It does, for now. But, you know, it won't forever. And, so, while it still does, I've got a chance to make some really interesting films.

So when you look at the hoopla, what part are you most glad is over? Is it so you have time to make different movies?
That's the thing...

You had time for stage productions...
But not for films. I won't miss having to tell people, "No, I won't be available for another year and a half." I won't miss that. Look, there's always going to be premieres and all of that. That kind of stuff. I won't miss the mania that kind of surrounds it. But it's not like I disliked any of that at the same time. it's one of those things where you go, I don't know -- it's the equivalent of having a really, really good steak. Like, you have it, then it's gone. You don't miss it. You don't go, "Oh, I wish that steak were back here." You go, "Damn, I enjoyed that."

I've missed steak before.
OK, but you don't want to regurgitate it and eat it again!

That's fair.
But that's the kind of thing I'd say about "Potter." It was like a good steak for 10 years, I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't try and bring it back up.

At one point you were attached to play photographer Dan Eldon. What happened?
Yeah, yeah... I was attached to that for a while. We felt that the script changes were needed.

My ex-girlfriend went to high school with him, so it's a project that I've paid attention to.
Oh, really? Yeah, it was a great script. And then I read a little more about his life and the script was fantastic, but it wasn't entirely -- reading about Dan, as well as being an inspirational and amazing person, he was also abrasive. And he annoyed a lot of people. He had a knack for pissing people off.

I've heard that.
And that wasn't in the script. And I felt that it needed that. So, yeah, that was the reason for that.
