Ask Engadget: should companies include a cable with a new product?

Ask Engadget

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from David, who wants to know if you'd prefer a free cable or a cheaper device when you buy pro audio gear. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

Many thanks!"

a) Include a cheap cable and let people who care buy a high quality one?
b) Include a reasonable quality cable but increase the price?
c) Include no cable and make it clear they need to buy one?

"I work for a small audio-tech company and we're currently getting close to releasing our first retail product, which does surround sound from stereo inputs -- kinda like Dolby Pro Logic, except good. Internally, we're agonizing over if we should include a stereo RCA cable. Of course, users will need to integrate an additional cable into their setup, but plenty of people will have spares lying around at home. Do you think it's better to:

What a question! We're decidedly of two minds, since given a bit of haggling, most retailers will chuck in a branded lead, but we'd hate to get our shiny new gear home to find it's missing a key component the one time they don't. Our dithering aside, it's time to turn the question over to our faithful Engadgeteers with this chance to shape the future of the high-end audio business for the better... we'd better not disappoint the man!

DIY Washing Soda [Cleaning]

DIY Washing SodaAt Lifehacker we love making our own cleaning products. Many of these products such as dishwasher detergent, laundry detergent, citrus spray cleaner, and rust removal tanks all require a substance known as washing soda that can be hard to find in some areas. Luckily you can make your own using baking soda and your oven.

Household weblog Penniless Parenting explains the process:

The difference between baking soda and washing soda is water and carbon dioxide. Seriously. Baking soda's chemical makeup is NaHCO3 (1 sodium, 1 hydrogen, one carbon, and 3 oxygen molecules). Washing soda's chemical makeup is Na2CO3 (2 sodium, 1 carbon, and 3 oxygen molecules). When baking soda is heated up to high temperatures, it breaks down to become washing soda, water steam, and carbon dioxide.

All you need to do to turn ordinary baking soda into washing soda is to pour baking soda in a wide baking dish and bake on 400-degrees Fahrenheit until it loses its luster and becomes a little grainy?a commenter remarked that a batch of 6 tablespoons took around half an hour.Photo by Nature's Nurture Blog

PFT: Replacement ref said they were 'pawns'

350x-1Getty Images

Wayne Elliott has had a wild week.

On Monday night, he wore the white hat as the referee of the crew that bungled the Seahawks-Packers game.? On Friday night, Elliott worked a high school football game.

In the interim, Elliott says his phone has been ringing with calls from angry fans, telling him he should ?commit suicide? and that he ?should die.?

But he still believes it was the right call.

?The replay guy just said there is nothing here that we can use to overturn it. It?s going to stand,? Elliott told FOX7 in Austin.? (This confirm that, when it came to replay reviews during the lockout, non-replacement replay officials were actually usurping the authority of the on-field referees.)

As we recently explained, via the NFL?s rulebook and casebook, there was enough evidence to overturn the ruling on the field, because Packers safety M.D. Jennings had ?control? of the ball before Seahawks receiver Golden Tate, which is the key factor regardless of what happens as they land on the ground and wrestle for the ball.? (Sorry, Seahawks truthers, but that?s the truth.)

Elliott also said he has ?no regrets? about accepting the assignment as a replacement, and that it was ?the most fun I?ve ever had.?

It was the most fun he?s had because he has been working as an official at the lower levels of the sport since 1978.? The fact that he hadn?t risen to the NFL or to a high-end college conference in the past 34 years tells us all we need to know about his overall skills.? As we?ve said time and again, if the replacements were among the best of the best, they would have been among those who were locked out.

Elliott declined to apologize to the fans of the Packers, explaining that if the call had gone the other way people would be asking if he should apologize to the Seahawks fans.

Scheduled to work the Vikings-Lions game in Week Four, Elliott said he wanted to ?get the bad taste out of his mouth? from Monday night?s game ? you know, the one for which he has nothing about which to apologize.

ChannelTrends: Why Elite Customer Service is Essential to ...

?Unless you have 100% customer satisfaction?you must improve.? ? Horst Schulz

Constant improvement is a mantra among IT channel companies, especially when it comes to the services they deliver and the clients that receive them. There?s no place for complacency in an industry as competitive as this, and owners have to keep their eyes, and business practices, focused properly on process upgrades and other enhancements to ensure their long-term success. Identifying the areas where a company needs improvement can be difficult, but making the changes that strengthen those services can be a more daunting task.

Good companies become great by tightening the screws on their processes, streamlining and automating each step involved in service delivery and support. They review their metrics and assess their performance based on industry benchmarks constantly, looking for new ways to improve their operations and their level of customer service. When everything is running optimally within the business, they can focus more time and attention on both current and prospective clients. The same principle applies to IT solution providers, vendors and distributors.

In order to reach the point of eternal service enlightenment, most successful companies continually:

  1. Perform internal operational assessments.
  2. Seek client feedback; current, former and prospective.
  3. Implement industry best practices.

Frequency is often the stumbling block for smaller organizations, especially in the harried world of an emerging solution provider. How do you find time to conduct all the necessary steps on a weekly, monthly or even quarterly basis?

It?s not easy, but companies in search of greatness make it a high priority ? on par with their sales and operational responsibilities. After all, when an organization offers top quality service, it can make many of the other business operations a lot easier. Life for the sales, marketing and customer retention teams is much simpler when they?re not putting out fires, allowing them to focus more time and energy on growing the business.

So how do good companies gain the service expertise and knowledge needed to be great?? A number of them seek the input of their peers and related industry experts, and engage in meaningful discussions with those who face similar challenges and opportunities. The CompTIA IT Services and Support (ITSS) Community has provided that type of forum for several years, bringing together a myriad of services-dependent solution providers, vendors, distributors and industry professionals. Their meetings offer much more than networking opportunities and brainstorming sessions; they collaborate to develop key initiatives and best practices to improve the industry.

ITSS is the original CompTIA peer group, serving as stepping stone for many of the association?s other communities that are actively engaged in specific vertical markets and technologies. Several of those groups came about from a specific initiative or work session developed by services members, and providers continue to benefit from joining the discussion in each.

Service is a foundational element of all CompTIA communities. This quality will be on display when the ITSS, Managed Print Services, and Mobility groups gather together in Fort Worth, Texas on October 29 to 30 for the CompTIA IT Services and Support Community Meeting. This joint meeting agenda is packed with discussions and topics to help solution providers or any IT services-oriented professional improve their businesses. Several of the scheduled activities focus on service delivery transformation, including:

  • A keynote presentation by Steven Young, senior director of service delivery transformation with Cisco Technical Services.
  • A panel presentation with members of all three participating communities.
  • Roundtable from the perspective of each group.

In the joint meeting, members will also explore a number of the issues facing the IT services industry and initiatives that each community could adopt for 2013 to explicitly address those concerns and/or opportunities. Whether you?d like to attend the multiple-group event or just learn more about the ITSS and other CompTIA communities, contact Cathy Alper at ?CAlper@comptia.org.

Brian Sherman is founder of Tech Success Communications, specializing in editorial content and consulting for the IT channel. His?previous roles include?chief editor at Business Solutions magazine and senior director of industry alliances with Autotask. Contact Brian at Bsherman@techsuccesscommunications.com.

Libya leader to NBC: Film not behind consulate attack

In an NBC News exclusive, Libya's President Mohammed Magarief tells NBC's Ann Curry that no mastermind has been arrested in the attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi but that he believes it was a pre-planned act of terrorism involving elements of al-Qaida.

?

By NBC News staff

Updated at 7:59 a.m. ET: An anti-Islam film that sparked violent protests in many countries had?"nothing to do with" a?deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi earlier this month, Libya's president told NBC News.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News'?Ann Curry, President Mohamed Magarief discounted claims that the attack was in response to a movie produced in California and available on YouTube. He noted that the assault happened on Sept. 11 and that the video had been available for months before that.

"Reaction should have been, if it was genuine, should have been six months earlier. So it was postponed until the 11th of September," he said. "They chose this date, 11th of September to carry a certain message."

NYT: Deadly Libya attack a major blow to CIA efforts

Magarief said there were no protesters at the site before the attack, which he noted came in two assaults, first with rocket-propelled grenades on the consulate, then with mortars at a safe house.

Protests ignited by a controversial film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad spread throughout Muslim world.

The attack took the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens, as well as information management officer Sean Smith and security personnel Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty.

US Ambassador Chris Stevens was 'courageous,' Obama says

Magarief told Curry that based on the accuracy of the assault, he believes the attackers must have had training and experience using the weapons.

"It's a pre-planned act of terrorism," he said, adding that the anti-Islam film had "nothing to do with this attack."

'A strong friend'
Magarief said that while Libyans appeared to be behind the attack that "these Libyans do not represent the Libyan people or Libyan population in any sense of the word."

Hilary Stevens, sister of Christopher Stevens, the U.S. Ambassador to Libya who died Tuesday during an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. In an interview with Rock Center Anchor Brian Williams, Stevens reflects on her brother's legacy and work.

He added: "We consider the United States as a friend, not only a friend, a strong friend, who stood with us in our moment of need."

More than 40 people have been questioned in connection with the incident,?the Libyan leader?told Curry.

He described Stevens as a "humble and very unique human being" and a "great friend of Libya."

Thousands of Libyans stormed the headquarters of an Islamist militia group in Benghazi Friday night in a deadly exchange. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

Backlash: Protesting Libyans storm militant compound

The Obama administration initially maintained that the attacks were directly linked to protests over the film. Speaking on NBC?s ?Meet the Press? on Sept. 16, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said: ?What happened in Benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hours before in Cairo, almost a copycat of the demonstrations against our facility in Cairo, prompted by the video.?

However, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney last week said it was "self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack."

Slain ambassador's mom: 'He was trying to do something much bigger'

Speaking before the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, President Barack Obama said: ?There are no words that excuse the killing of innocent? people.

On Tuesday, President Obama spoke to the United Nations general assembly in an emotional speech about the recent violence against Americans. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

Venezuela poll: Chavez leading rival by 10 points

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? President Hugo Chavez held a 10-point lead over rival Henrique Capriles in one of the final polls ahead of Venezuela's Oct. 7 election, but the survey released Tuesday showed the challenger narrowing the gap.

The poll by Datanalisis, one of Venezuela's most respected polling firms, found that about 49 percent said they intend to vote for Chavez and about 39 percent said they plan to vote for Capriles.

About 11 percent didn't reveal a preference, said Luis Vicente Leon, who heads the polling firm.

The results showed Capriles narrowing the 46-31 percent lead that Chavez held in June's poll by the same company.

Leon said it was the final poll Datanalisis plans to release publicly before the vote. It's possible the candidates' percentages may already have shifted somewhat since the survey was carried out weeks ago.

The poll questioned 1,600 people between Aug. 25 and Sept. 5, and had a margin of error of about 2 percentage points. It was paid for a group of about 100 clients, including businesses as well as government entities.

Leon said Capriles' active campaigning in about 260 towns across the country has had an impact.

Chavez, in contrast, has concentrated on a smaller number of campaign rallies, and has been less active after more than a year of cancer treatments including surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy.

Even though Chavez has said he's now cancer-free, Leon said the president's campaign clearly has been affected by his health problems.

He said that after nearly 14 years in office, Chavez for the first time will face a strong rival and that no other opposition candidate has achieved such support in pre-election polls when facing Chavez. The pollster also cautioned that changes in public opinion can still occur in the less than two weeks before the Oct. 7 vote.

Venezuelans have been bombarded with widely varying poll results ahead of the vote, and some pollsters haven't been open about discussing their sources of funding or political leanings.

Some political surveys, including those conducted by the pollster GIS XXI, run by Chavez's former justice minister Jesse Chacon, have repeatedly shown the president with a lead of more than 20 percent, and have been touted on state television.

Other polls, such as those of Consultores 21 and Varianzas, have shown Capriles either roughly even with Chavez or slightly ahead.

A survey released by Varianzas on Tuesday indicated a close race, with about 50 percent saying they plan to vote for Chavez and 48 percent siding with Capriles. The Varianzas poll consulted 2,000 people between Sept. 7 and 20, and had an error margin of about 2 percent, said Rafael Delgado, the company's director. He said the survey was financed by a private group, which he declined to reveal.

Meanwhile, state television broadcast the results of a survey by another company, International Consulting Services, saying Chavez had a lead of nearly 20 percentage points. The source of funding for that poll was unclear.

The wide differences in results have led many Venezuelans to doubt the accuracy of polls.

"The variation between the polls is so big that there are some that say Chavez is winning by 30 points and others that say he's losing by almost 10 points," said Angel Alvarez, a political science professor at Central University of Venezuela. "Most people don't believe in any of the polls anymore because they see so much variability that they say somebody is lying or everybody is lying, and on top of that ... there's been a lot of skepticism about the quality of the polls to predict results."

Many polls in the country are conducted using face-to-face interviews with people at their homes, and firms typically release details of their methodologies, including how interview questions are framed. In some cases, though, pollsters haven't released full details.

Datanalisis is widely considered one of the country's leading polling firms. It has had a record of accuracy in past elections and has earned respect from both political camps with its monthly surveys. The pollster accurately gauged that Chavez was leading ahead of his last re-election victory in 2006, when he won with 63 percent of the vote.

Chavez's approval ratings have slipped since then, and he has been spending heavily on social programs and public housing construction this year seeking to shore up support while facing a vigorous challenge by Capriles.

Adding to the uncertainty ahead of the vote is the large segment of voters, in some polls more than 10 percent, who describe themselves as undecided or who don't reveal which candidate they plan to support.

In Venezuela nowadays, people seem to view it as normal for there to be a "war of the polls" and don't appear to be swayed one way or the other by the surveys, said Ignacio Avalos, director of the Venezuelan Electoral Observatory, a vote monitoring group.

"Part of the election campaign is about making people think you're the one who's going to win and generating a positive effect," Avalos said. Despite the conflicting surveys, he said, "I have the impression that the results are going to be close, that it's going to be an election decided by a narrow margin."

Cheap, Portable Ultrasound Could a Be Lifesaver .

And that's the "buy now" price for the "Interson SeeMore USB Portable Ultrasound Abdominal Probe". [bonmil.com]

On the other hand...
As someone who had 3 different ultrasound diagnoses, to the same heart condition, by 2 specialists - which in the end turned out to be of viral origin (they were literally chasing shadows); and who later had a dubious privilege of fixing and editing hundreds of ultrasound photos for an ultrasound textbook, with each step done according to the instructions of an instructor/teacher with some 40 years in the ultrasound diagnostic - price of the equipment is not the biggest obstacle in getting the ultrasound "to the masses".

It's training and experience.
And you need literally years of both to start making your ultrasound guesses educated.
Cause without both extensive training with an experienced ultrasound technician AND years of experience in doing ultrasounds of that particular section of human body - that whole "subjective interpretation of an objective method" thing amounts to just guessing.

There's an episode of House [wikia.com] where this is nicely demonstrated by House and Wilson trying to figure out if Cuddy's daughter has swallowed a coin.
On ultrasound it might be a dime, or it may just be an air bubble.

One Philosophy [Rant] on Online Marketing | Marketing Now

Online marketing more often than not takes a beating in the press. In truth, it is one of the singularly great things about the net if you can get the hang of it.

If you can figure online marketing out, it gives you the ability to spend your time, not your money, advertising your business. It gives you access to a much broader market than any brick and mortar business. It allows you to kick the crap out of big companies that just throw money at Internet marketing, a tactic often used to crush smaller business in the brick and mortar world.

When you get down to brass knuckles, online marketing not only gives you a level playing field with the big or bigger boys, it gives you an advantage. I like to call this the leverage and arrogance advantage.

Assume you write one piece of great software and try to start a small company in the brick and mortar world. If you are deemed to be a threat by the big software companies, what is going to happen? If you don?t get bought out, they are going to wipe you out. Since you have limited resources and little leverage with retailers, you are screwed, blue and tattooed. Not on the web.

Online marketing is beautiful because it flattens the playing field for all players, big and small. The key is search engine optimization. Regardless of how much money a dominant company in an industry throws at search engine rankings, they will never have an inherent advantage over you. They have no leverage, because there is nobody to buy off. The best they can do is buy advertisements, which fewer people click. If you get the top ranking on Google, Yahoo and MSN for your keywords, nobody can knock you off unless they do a better optimization job than you do. In no way, shape or form would this ever be possible in the brick and mortar world unless you have a monstrous amount of cash.

The second reason you should use online marketing is arrogance. Dominant brick and mortar companies use marketing firms to push their brands on television, billboards, magazines and so on. When the companies open a site, they often have the same marketing firms handle their internet efforts as well. Crushing them on search engines is like taking candy from a baby. They just throw money at the problem, a strategy that fails every time on the web.

You, however, are not going to waste money by purchasing banner ads and other junk that will waste your money. Nope, you are going to pursue search engine optimization on your own or through a credible group. While the dominant company is spending $20 a click for their ads, you are going to be laughing your way to the bank as customers pour in from your top rankings on Google, Yahoo and MSN.

Does online marketing deserve the criticism it gets? Sometimes it does. Once you figure it out, however, you will never slander it again.

Guidelines on how to Enhance your Business Job interviews : Verified

September 24, 2012 ? 7:07 am

There are several things that you need to know in regard to enterprise job interviews in the present economy. Some people are incredibly knowledgeable from doing job interviews. They will usually not disregard some of the much more apparent things. If you are a college move on simply entering the staff, you will be at most disadvantageous area. What you should do is struck the pavement working, even though you do not know much. With reference the experience level, the employer might be looking for a particular level of experience through potential candidates. More than likely, they are going to tell you upfront which kind of experience they are trying to find. In order to make the most out of your company job interviews, listed below are 3 beneficial strategies.

Eye-to-eye contact can be an important factor in terms of just how individuals see a person in the course of job interviews. You look like more genuine and also truthful choosing this. During an job interview, you should appear peaceful and also self-possessed and one way to do this is in order to make his full attention often. However we are all various and not everybody is completely comfortable with direct his full attention. If you are one of these simple individuals, you will get more at ease in internet marketing start by making sure to get it done whenever you can. When we talk to a person, you ought to make an additional energy to look these inside the eye. It?s suitable, and even regarded normal, to adopt infrequent breaks or cracks from his full attention if you are chatting. At any time we read about several perspective about some thing marketing associated, we immediately think whether it may work with this strategies. You will find all kinds of company designs that will not make utilization of each and every promotion vehicle, understanding that could include my evaluation here given that we?re talking about it. When time is actually a problem with a person, then you can always look from outsourcing techniques so you will have the extra time and energy to work about enlargement jobs. On the other hand, it will seem within our expertise that most companies might like to do more. Possibly which easiest path to development is through running present strategies, and then seek to add what you can which is new. We all know that you?ve some type of understanding of how far you want to take your company.

Despite good initiatives, we quite often do not understand specific things throughout discussions. A couple of people may possibly avoid a discussion having a very different take a look at what proceeded.

Don?t reply to a good interviewer?s issue before you are certain you realize the meaning. It?s better to require caution rather than danger a good inappropriate answer. Hearing is probably the most critical areas and abilities in any communication. Tests have verified the average person doesn?t actually pay attention perfectly.

An individual can become really really irritating with direct his full attention which never breaks. Prolonged his full attention can start to look intense, that isn?t the impression you want to offer. You need to make his full attention regularly, although not constantly. There?s nothing uncommon relating to this, as it is the way we typically sustain his full attention when talking to people we all fulfill.

This is one thing that?s most relevant once the interview panel member poses a matter. Even though responding to a matter, nevertheless, additionally it is common to move your eyes a little as you take into consideration some thing. Therefore just do what is typical for you personally but make sure you make regular his full attention any time responding to queries.

You have to bottom your own approach to the job interview on the form of company or person who is selecting a person. Concurrently, you can find basic principles that needs to be kept in mind for all selection interviews. Preferably, you are additionally ready for the work you happen to be especially obtaining. Being well prepared allows you to largely foresee every little thing the interviewer is likely to throw at you.

Chick-fil-A waffles on gay marriage, fries brand image

By Martha C. White, NBC News contributor

?

Updated at 4:45 p.m. ET: In a message posted on his website Friday afternoon, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee said he spoke?personally with Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy, who gave him a statement saying, "There continues to be erroneous implications in the media that Chick-fil-A changed our practices and priorities in order to obtain permission for a new restaurant in Chicago. That is incorrect. Chick-fil-A made no such concessions, and we remain true to who we are and who we have been."

"I am angry and disgusted," said?Rick Garcia, senior policy advisor at advocacy group The Civil Rights Agenda. "Chick-fil-A lied to us and lied to the alderman so that they could open their store in Chicago."?

Chick-fil-A is playing?a high-stakes game of chicken, as both fans and foes of the food chain question what its new stance on gay rights really means.

Corporate reputation experts warned that Chick-fil-A was quickly alienating potential customers across the political spectrum.?

"These issues are ... very difficult for brands to navigate through," said?Tim Calkins, marketing professor at the?Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.?"They could've stuck to their positions and backed it up. The fact they haven't done that says clearly this whole issue has become a problem for them."

The Atlanta-based chain became embroiled in the gay marriage debate over the summer when?president Dan Cathy's spoke about his belief in "traditional" marriage in an interview with a Baptist publication.?Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee called for a "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," which drew droves of supporters to the company's stores. In response, gay-rights groups organized a "Same-Sex Kiss-In" later that week.

This week, Chicago-based advocacy group The Civil Rights Agenda announced that city Alderman Proco Joe Moreno, who had voiced objections to the proposed opening of a Chick-fil-A restaurant in his ward, had reversed his opinion after the fast-food operator had a change of heart.?

Chick-fil-A said it would "treat every person with honor, dignity and respect -- regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation and gender." Although this was characterized by TCRA and Moreno as the first time Chick-fil-A put this in writing, the company used almost identical wording in a statement it issued back in July.?

The company also pledged that its nonprofit arm, the?WinShape Foundation, would "not support[ing] organizations with political agendas," and said, "our intent is not to engage in political or social debates."

Through WinShape, "Chick-Fil-A has donated more than $5 million since 2003 to anti-gay groups,?including those that have been designated 'hate groups' by the Southern Poverty Law Center," according to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Initially, company spokespeople would not comment, referring only to the statement issued by the company following the furor that erupted over the summer.

Chick-fil-A says it will stop funding anti-gay groups

Chick-fil-A tried to keep the agreement under wraps, said Rick Garcia, TCRA senior policy advisor. "My perspective is they want to have it both ways," he said.??They?re getting opposition all over major metropolitan areas particularly in the north... The dilemma for them is will this hurt them with the right wingers?"

The answer is probably yes. "In my last meeting with company executives, I corroborated what they told me back in January: that donations to anti-gay groups, which most concerned the LGBT community, have ceased," Moreno's statement said. Since the news broke, Chick-fil-A's Facebook page has been inundated with angry messages from people who say they are now-former supporters of the chain.

Moreno said he got verbal assurances from company executives, and he said the verbiage in the release and similar wording validated his claim, although gay rights were never specifically mentioned. He said Chick-fil-A executives also let him look at an internal accounting document from the foundation that showed no donations to groups that oppose gay marriage during this calendar year.

It's unlikely that the majority of Chick-fil-A supporters who stood on line, some for hours, in the heat to buy food as part of "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" last month knew that the company had quietly stopped funding the anti-gay marriage cause some eight months earlier. Chick-fil-A did not release sales figures but said that the event was a "record" day for sales; one independent analyst estimated that the company could have seen a 50 percent increase in sales that day.

Moreno said he was satisfied that the references to political and social issues, along with the pledge to respect all sexual orientations in Chick-fil-A's statements, reflected a commitment to stop funding anti-gay groups. He said the somewhat vague verbiage ? same-sex marriage, for instance, is never specifically mentioned as an issue ? was actually better in that it implied a more inclusive brand of tolerance on Chick-fil-A's part.

He admitted, though, that relying on the company's own assertions about its donation practices was a bit of a gamble. "I'm not naive," he said, adding that the company could still "try to find a way around" keeping its word.

He didn't have to wait long. On the same day that his press release was dated, Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy Tweeted a photo of a WinShape fundraiser called Ride for the Family, which ends Friday. The event's registration page instructed participants to make the $3,500 registration fee?payable to the Marriage and Family Foundation, Inc., an organization founded by Dan Cathy's brother. Its headquarters have the same mailing address as Chick-fil-A's.

This prompted a response from TCRA. "Although The Civil Rights Agenda is pleased with the initial outcome of Chick-fil-A?s agreement... more work needs to be done in holding Chick-fil-A accountable to their promises," it said in a statement Thursday evening.

"I?m discouraged by that behavior," Moreno said about Cathy's Tweet. "He has the right to have bigoted beliefs," he added.

Supporters and detractors alike can only continue to wonder where the brand's allegiances lie. Chick-fil-A issued a statement Thursday, saying "We want to provide some context and clarity in around who we are, what we believe and our priorities in relation?to?corporate giving." It went onto say, "Our intent is not to support political or social agendas," but it didn't mention gay rights or gay-marriage causes specifically.

"It seems to me that their change in position is half-hearted and does not seem either genuine or trustworthy," said Marcia Horowitz, senior executive vice president at public relations firm?Rubenstein Associates, Inc. "As a result, it may well further inflame the issue, with both sides now dissatisfied with their response."

Fear can be erased from the brain, research shows

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? Newly formed emotional memories can be erased from the human brain. This is shown by researchers from Uppsala University in a new study now being published by the academic journal Science. The findings may represent a breakthrough in research on memory and fear.

Thomas ?gren, a doctoral candidate at the Department of Psychology under the supervision of Professors Mats Fredrikson and Tomas Furmark, has shown, that it is possible to erase newly formed emotional memories from the human brain.

When a person learns something, a lasting long-term memory is created with the aid of a process of consolidation, which is based on the formation of proteins. When we remember something, the memory becomes unstable for a while and is then restabilized by another consolidation process. In other words, it can be said that we are not remembering what originally happened, but rather what we remembered the last time we thought about what happened. By disrupting the reconsolidation process that follows upon remembering, we can affect the content of memory.

In the study the researchers showed subjects a neutral picture and simultaneously administered an electric shock. In this way the picture came to elicit fear in the subjects which meant a fear memory had been formed. In order to activate this fear memory, the picture was then shown without any accompanying shock. For one experimental group the reconsolidation process was disrupted with the aid of repeated presentations of the picture. For a control group, the reconsolidation process was allowed to complete before the subjects were shown the same repeated presentations of the picture.

In that the experimental group was not allowed to reconsolidate the fear memory, the fear they previously associated with the picture dissipated. In other words, by disrupting the reconsolidation process, the memory was rendered neutral and no longer incited fear. At the same time, using a MR-scanner, the researchers were able to show that the traces of that memory also disappeared from the part of the brain that normally stores fearful memories, the nuclear group of amygdala in the temporal lobe.

'These findings may be a breakthrough in research on memory and fear. Ultimately the new findings may lead to improved treatment methods for the millions of people in the world who suffer from anxiety issues like phobias, post-traumatic stress, and panic attacks,' says Thomas ?gren.

Traders scour, barter, hem and haw over T-shirts, bras, pants and shoes sent to help clothe a nation of more than 160 million people where the textile industry largely collapsed years ago.

But while much comes in as Western donations, those on the receiving end sell them instead of giving them away, creating a massive industry that makes it even harder for Nigeria's remaining clothing manufacturers to complete against a tidal wave of cotton and polyester.

"More often than not what people call donations actually ends up been hijacked by people ... who profiteer from it," said Diran Akinleye, an economics professor at the University of Lagos. "So even though it starts out in the U.S. or the (United Kingdom) as a donation, it ultimately becomes a business on this side."

Katangua Market sits past the international airport, surrounded by suburbs of Nigeria's largest city. Piles of clothes ranging from jeans to underwear lay on the ground as traders pick through them, selecting what they want to buy. Some sell the clothes direct to customers while other buyers will take the items to shops in and outside of the city.

Nearby, rows of tailors sit at foot-cranked sewing machines, repairing tears and resizing some large shirts. Piles of bras and panties litter the ground. T-shirts bear strange, cryptic slogans, like a cartoon character saying "No, no no!" A jersey with the No. 3 reads "Pittsburgh." Other shirts are more recognizable, like an Obama 2008 campaign shirt or an "I Love NY" T-shirt on a woman sewing nearby.

"We need this clothing," said clothing trader Sunny Nnjiofor. "Most of the factories that produce all this clothing materials have folded up."

Some clothes sell here for three pieces to a $1, a bargain compared to locally made shirts. Traditional clothing still has its place, though increasingly poor women will wear a cloth wrapper around her waist while wearing a secondhand T-shirt from the U.S. Western-style button-up shirts and pants also are increasingly worn by men.

Nigeria once had a thriving textile industry, largely based in the northern city of Kano. But in recent decades, as Nigeria's state-run electricity company fell into shambles, the mills slowed and finally stopped. Some companies, like Omas Nigeria Ltd., still produce clothes for government agencies and private businesses, but making a profit has grown increasingly difficult as they depend on diesel generators for electricity, said Margaret Orubu, Omas' managing director.

"The cost of production is very high. Electricity, to water, the rent and (other charges are) very expensive compared to what people bring in from abroad," Orubu said. "If you compare the price you'll find out that after production, the cost of the ones we produce here are very, very expensive."

While undercutting costs, the importation of donated clothing provides jobs in the country's massive gray labor market. Tailors wander through streets here, snapping scissors to announce their presence. Salesmen drape the secondhand clothes over their arms, walking through neighborhoods to show off their wares.

(AP) ? The latest prisoner to die at the U.S. base in Guantanamo, Cuba, was identified Tuesday as a Yemeni man with a history of mental illness who battled guards inside the prison and challenged his confinement all the way to the Supreme Court.

Adnan Latif spent more than a decade at Guantanamo, where he repeatedly went on hunger strike and once slashed his wrist and hurled the blood at his visiting lawyer. He also received some mental health treatment at the detainee hospital, according to his lawyers and court records.

The government accused him of training with the Taliban in Afghanistan but he had never been charged and the military said there were no plans to prosecute him.

Latif was found unconscious in his cell inside the maximum security section of Guantanamo known as Camp 5 on Saturday and pronounced dead a short time later, according to statement from the U.S. military's Miami-based Southern Command. It said the cause of death remains under investigation. He was the ninth prisoner to die at Guantanamo.

His Washington-based attorney, David Remes, said Latif was a defiant prisoner who refused to accept his imprisonment.

"This is a man who would not accept his situation," Remes said. "He would not accept his mistreatment. He would not go gently into that good night."

Latif was well known in the small community of lawyers and human rights activists who focus on national security issues and Guantanamo because his legal challenge that was turned back by the Supreme Court in June was considered a major setback in the battle against the policy of holding men for more than decade without charge at the U.S. base in Cuba.

"The death of Adnan Latif, who had repeatedly attempted suicide in the past, underscores the terrible human cost of indefinite detention," said Andrea Prasow, senior counterterrorism counsel for Human Rights Watch.

The U.S. military said Latif was 32, but Remes said his passport and other records indicate he was 35 or 36 and spent much of his life in his native country. His lawyers said he was in a car accident in 1994 and suffered a severe head injury that prompted him to travel to Afghanistan for medical treatment from a charity in August 2001.

The government said he went to Afghanistan at the urging of a militant recruiter. There, the Taliban trained him and stationed him on the front lines in their fight against the Northern Alliance, according to court papers. Latif said investigators misunderstood his statements and he denied ever being part of the Taliban.

Pakistani authorities captured him near the border in late 2001 and he was among the first prisoners sent to Guantanamo in January 2002.

At one point, military records show, Latif was cleared for release. But the U.S. has ceased returning any prisoners to Yemen because the country is unstable and its government is considered ill-equipped to prevent former militants from resuming previous activities. There are about 55 Yemenis among the 167 men held at Guantanamo.

Latif had a troubled time at Guantanamo. Attorney Marc Falkoff visited him in 2008 and found that had dropped from 145 pounds (66 kilograms) to 107 pounds (49 kilograms) and appeared "near death," according to court records.

At the time, the prisoner was not on hunger strike and the cause of his weight loss was unknown, the lawyer said. He also said Latif was "manifesting signs of schizophrenia, for which he is apparently not being treated."

At other times, Latif apparently joined the hunger strike that has been a continuing protest at Guantanamo for years. A prison spokesman, Navy Capt. Robert Durand, said that Latif ended his most recent hunger strike June 1 and at the time of his death was at 95 percent of his ideal body weight, and 14 pounds heavier then when first imprisoned.

He was in a disciplinary unit of Guantanamo for hurling bodily fluids at a guard, the military said. It wasn't the first time: In August 2008, he spit in the face of a guard and was subjected to disciplinary measures that included the loss of his mattress and blanket, according to court records.

During a visit with Remes in 2009, Latif used a piece of veneer from a table to slash one of his wrists and hurled the blood at the lawyer before he was subdued by guards. At the time, his lawyer said he was being kept in isolation in a psychiatric ward and was claiming to hear voices and see ghosts.

Latif challenged his confinement with a civil petition known as a writ of habeas corpus. In July 2010, a judge ruled a classified report was insufficient evidence that he had trained at the militant camp and ordered his release. The government appealed to a higher court, which ruled that courts should assume government documents were accurate and reliable. In June, the Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal, which lawyers said has caused increased despair among prisoners at Guantanamo.

"Anyway you look at it, he died because he was there," Remes said. "If he committed suicide, it was because his detention killed his spirit. If it wasn't suicide it could have been medical neglect. It could have been mistreatment by the guards. But at the end of the day he died because he was there."
