Skydiver gets ready for bid to break sound barrier

ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) ? Extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner started preparations early Sunday for his attempt to be the first skydiver in history to break the sound barrier.

Before sunrise the former Austrian paratrooper's team began unpacking the 30 million cubic foot helium balloon to hoist the capsule that will carry him 23 miles up in the sky.

Early Sunday, mission control officials declared a "weather hold" until 8:15 a.m. MDT, and said that inflation of the balloon wouldn't begin until after that hold is lifted. Earlier, the launch team said they were aiming for the three-hour ascent to begin Sunday at 8 a.m.

The jump was postponed twice last week because of high winds.

If he succeeds in the death-defying feat, the man nicknamed "Fearless Felix" will break a 52-year-old altitude record by Joe Kittinger, who jumped from 19.5 miles and reached a speed of 614 mph, just under the sound barrier.

This attempt will be the end of a five-year road for Baumgartner, a record-setting high-altitude jumper. He already made two preparation jumps in the area, one in March from 15 miles high and on in July from 18 miles high. It will also be the end of his extreme altitude jumping career; he has promised this will be his final jump.

Coincidentally, Sunday also marks the 65th anniversary of U.S. test pilot Chuck Yeager successful attempt to become the first man to officially break the sound barrier aboard an airplane.

Baumgartner plans to travel faster than the speed of sound with only the benefit of a high-tech suit.

Dr. Jonathan Clark, Baumgartner's medical director, has told reporters he expects the pressurized spacesuit to protect him from the shock waves of breaking the sound barrier. If all goes well and he survives the jump, NASA could certify a new generation of spacesuits for protecting astronauts and provide an escape option from spacecraft at 120,000 feet, he said.

Any contact with the capsule on his exit could tear the pressurized suit. A rip could expose him to a lack of oxygen and temperatures as low as 70 degrees below zero. It could cause potentially lethal bubbles to form in his bodily fluids, a condition known as "boiling blood."

Clark is a NASA space shuttle crew surgeon who lost his wife, Laurel Clark, in the 2003 Columbia accident. No one knows what happens to a body when it breaks the sound barrier, Clark said.

Winds have to be under 2 MPH for Baumgartner to start his ascent to the stratosphere from this desert town better known as the site of a rumored UFO landing in 1947.

Jumping from more than three times the height of the average cruising altitude for jetliners, Baumgartner's expects to hit a speed of 690 mph or more before he activates his parachute at 9,500 feet above sea level, or about 5,000 feet above the ground in southeastern New Mexico. The total jump should take about 10 minutes.

The energy drink maker Red Bull, which is sponsoring the feat, has been promoting a live Internet stream of the event from nearly 30 cameras on the capsule, the ground and a helicopter. But organizers said there will be a 20-second delay in their broadcast of footage in case of a tragic accident.

After the jump, Baumgartner says he plans to settle down with his girlfriend and fly helicopters on mountain rescue and firefighting missions in the U.S. and Austria.

The link below is to an entertaining rap about the joys, pitfalls and pratfalls of parenting.

If you are a parent (or even had parents) there are some funky lyrics in this rap that should be able to relate to.

Additionally, one of the things that?s so appealing to me about this type of video is that the jokey juxtaposition of boring parents trying to be cool by rapping about mundane daily family life.

Lithuanians sway toward opposition populists, Social Democrats in hope to end economic woes

VILNIUS, Lithuania - Lithuanians exasperated with economic hardship were poised to hand a stunning victory to a populist party led by a disgraced Russia-born millionaire, early results and an exit poll after Sunday's election show, setting the stage for a coalition with an impeached president and Social Democrats.

The opposition Labor Party, led by Viktor Uspaskich, a man widely known as the "pickle king" for having made his fortune selling jarred pickles, was leading with 26 per cent of the vote after more than 37 per cent of precincts counted.

The Social Democrats, also in the opposition, were second with 19 per cent. Order and Justice, a populist party led by Rolandas Paksas, who as president was impeached in 2004 for violating the Constitution and abuse of office, was fourth with 9 per cent.

All three parties campaigned on strident criticism of the ruling conservative coalition that took office four years ago at the start of Lithuania's debilitating economic crisis and was forced to raise taxes and cut expenses to ward off bankruptcy ? austerity measures that provoked a voter backlash.

Leaders of the three opposition parties were meeting early Monday to hash over the broad outlines of an agreement that could possibly lead to a new government coalition.

However, only half the seats in the 141-member Parliament are determined by party lists, while the other half consists of single-mandates, many of which will require a run-off ballot in two weeks. Only then will a clear picture of who could form the next government emerge.

Regardless, a Labor Party victory in the party-list phase would signify a tremendous comeback for Uspaskich, a member of the European Parliament who is still under investigation in Lithuania for allegedly fraudulent party finance operations. In 2006 he was forced to resign as economy minister for a conflict-of-interest case with Russia and suspicions about a faked diploma from a Moscow-based institute.

Even if Uspaskich's party wins the greatest number of seats in the 141-member Parliament, it is far from certain that he would get the nod for prime minister, since President Dalia Grybauskaite, whose duty is to appoint the head of government, has expressed deep reservations about Uspaskich's integrity.

The conservative Homeland Union led by Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius was third in the ongoing vote count with some 10.6 per cent support.

Lithuania, which is just emerging from the economic crisis, is still beset with high unemployment ? over 13 per cent ? and falling living standards due in large part to higher energy costs. Tens of thousands have left the country to find jobs elsewhere in Europe.

Lithuanians also voted in a referendum on whether to build a new nuclear power plant, which the ruling coalition claims will help establish the country's energy independence.

Opposition lawmakers, including the Social Democrats, have said the approximate $6 billion project is too expensive for the country of 3 million people.

Based on your problem associated with residence, job status and also earnings, you are able to be eligible for a credit of up to $1500, however some loan companies will loan a maximum of $500. You will have a possiblity to discover how much you be eligible for just before agreeing to virtually any loan agreement.

There is an essential legitimate difference between a gift and also a loan. A really nice relative or perhaps pal could give you $5000 with regard to car repairs, as an example. In the event that there isn't any hope of payment, the money can be viewed as a present. The actual provider could not file suit for payment later inside a civil fit. But when the credit provider designates the money like a loan as well as the consumer will pay back again even a buck, the money can be viewed a legitimate loan and also the loan company could demand repayment whenever. Small statements legal courts spend much of period identifying regardless of whether the deal which includes money would have been a present or even bank loan. For that reason paperwork is essential when creating personal lending options in order to pals as well as loved ones.

The requirements to get a loan are quite obvious. In case you are employed, having a monthly profits involving $800 or even more, and also have a bank-account, you satisfy the basic qualifications. A number of loan providers inside our network could have additional needs.

Cash financial products are usually unsecured financial loans eliminated on the next wage. Since they are short-term financial products, they can be little; different from $100 to $1500 and repayment arrives in the next pay day. They might be very useful regarding conquering a brief monetary unexpected emergency, yet shouldn't be regarded as the long-term fiscal solution.

Most home loan programs are addressed by banks or any other professional loan companies. They could make use of a various conditions to find out if the potential consumer is skilled for a financial loan. Earlier credit score is nearly usually considered, together with current revenue and also assets. The goal of the money may also be a good issue-a set up expense possibility might have more appeal than an misguided concept for any new restaurant. 1 essential point may be the income in order to financial debt percentage in the customer. Can the customer manage to spend the money for loan back with interest? Professional loan providers generally 'sell' cash, consequently consumers must be aware simply how much financing truly 'costs' when it comes to real cash.

Research Review: Bigger Muscle Gains and Better Workout Plans ...

Chris Beardsley is a co-founder of?Strength and Conditioning Research, a monthly publication that summarizes the latest fitness research for strength and sports coaches, personal trainers, and athletes. The views expressed herein are his.

The fitness industry can be a confusing place, with many experts providing conflicting opinions. Scientific research is our best shot at providing objective and effective approaches to fitness.?Strength and Conditioning Research?is a monthly review service that covers new and interesting scientific studies on fitness topics. The studies included help answer difficult questions about optimal fitness, training, and body transformation.

Here are the summarized results of three recent studies that were covered in the review along with what those results mean for us.

Combining Strength and Endurance Training Could Increase Muscle Gains

Recently, researchers led by Jussi Mikkola at the Research Institute for Olympic Sports in Finland found concurrent strength and endurance training is counterproductive for improving explosive strength, while it could actually be better than strength-only training for improving muscle size[].

What did the researchers do?

The researchers recruited 44 healthy but untrained adult males for a 21-week study. The subjects were assigned to either resistance training only, endurance training only, or concurrent training groups.

The resistance training was performed twice a week and comprised two leg exercises: the leg press and the knee extension machine. The endurance training carried out twice a week and increased in both duration and intensity from 30-minutes sessions through to 60 ? 90-minutes sessions over the 21 weeks.

Before and after the 21-week training program, the researchers measured the knee extension strength and rate of force development of the subjects, as well as the cross-sectional area of their thigh muscle.

What happened?

The researchers found that only the strength-only group improved rate of force development significantly, by 38 ? 31 percent while the strength-endurance group actually decreased rate of force development by 7 ? 51 percent.

Rate of force development is very important for power athletes, as it determines how quickly the athlete is able to reach their full strength capability. In explosive sports, rate of force development is often more important than maximum strength.

However, the researchers found the cross-sectional area (size) of the thigh muscles increased by more in the strength-endurance group (11 ? 5 percent) than in the strength-only group (6 ? 5 percent).

What did the researchers conclude?

The researchers concluded that concurrent strength and endurance training optimizes gains in muscular size but interferes with improvements in explosive strength, as measured by rate of force development.

What does it mean for you?

If you are doing resistance training purely for power, perhaps because you compete in a Track and Field sport, then endurance training may reduce the gains you make from resistance training. On the other hand, if you are carrying out resistance training for your physique, some endurance training could actually enhance your results.

Eccentric Training Increases Muscle Length and Flexibility

In a recent review study led by Kieran O?Sullivan from the University of Limerick in Ireland, the reviewers found eccentric resistance training actually increases leg muscle flexibility, regardless of the muscle group studied[].

In normal strength training, an exercise is divided into two phases: the eccentric (lowering) phase and the concentric (lifting) phase. Eccentric training in research is where only the lowering phase is used. In practice, most lifters simply emphasize the lowering phase in order to obtain many of the same results.

What did the reviewers do?

The reviewers looked at a wide range of databases, concentrating on those that provide the highest quality of evidence: randomized clinical trials (RCTs). They included studies in their review that investigated the flexibility effects of eccentric training over a training period of longer than 4 weeks.

Their initial search revealed 285 individual studies, but after elimination of studies that did not fit all of the relevant criteria, the researchers were left with just six. However, the methodological quality of these six studies was rated as being very high, which means that we can be fairly sure that they are reliable.

What did the reviewers find?

The reviewers found all six studies showed clearly that eccentric training improved lower body flexibility, irrespective of whether the muscle group tested was the calves, the hamstrings, or the quadriceps.

What does it mean for you?

If you use lower body stretching in your routine and feel that you don?t have time for resistance training, you could try eccentric leg muscle training, which would kill two birds with one stone. ?

You could do this by performing movements that stress longer muscle length and emphasizing the eccentric component. Good choices would be: Romanian deadlifts for the hamstrings, single leg elevated calf-raises for the gastrocnemius, and Olympic-style squats to full depth for the quadriceps and gluteals.

Periodization Could Make a Big Difference in Strength Training

Recently, researchers from Brazil led by de Lima found the type of periodization used during a muscular endurance-training program altered how effective the training was at improving muscular endurance and reducing body fat[].

Periodized training involves a general plan for sets and reps for a given number of weeks or months of training. Linear periodization involves starting with a number of workouts of higher rep training and gradually decreasing the number of reps and increasing the weight over a period of several weeks or even months.

What did the researchers do?

The researchers recruited 28 young women and allocated them into three groups: linear periodization, daily undulating periodization, and a control. In both training programs, the subjects performed four workouts per week of which two were the same, in an A-B-A-B format. However, one program followed a linear progression and the other followed a daily undulating progression.

In the linear periodization program, the subjects performed 3 sets of 30RM in the first week, 3 sets of 25RM in the second week, 3 sets of 20RM in the third week, and 3 sets of 15RM in the fourth week. This pattern was repeated two further times in the 12-week training period.

In the daily undulating program, the intensity and volume were modified in the same week. In weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11, the subjects trained on days 1 and 2 with 3 sets of 30RM and on days 3 and 4 with 3 sets of 25RM. In weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12, participants trained on days 1 and 2 with 3 sets of 20RM and on days 3 and 4 with 3 sets of 15RM.

What happened?

The researchers found that both programs produced a significant decrease in body fat percentage and fat mass.

They also found the linear periodization program produced a greater reduction in body fat percentage than the daily undulating program. On the other hand, the daily undulating periodization model produced a significantly higher muscular endurance increase than the linear periodization model.

What did the researchers conclude?

The researchers concluded that, in a muscular endurance resistance-training program, linear periodization was superior for improving body composition while daily undulating performance was more effective for improving muscular endurance performance.

What does it mean for you?

If you make use of muscular endurance training and your goal is to lose body fat, then a linear periodization is more effective than a daily undulating program. However, if you want to improve muscular endurance, then a daily undulating periodization would be a better choice.

5 things I miss most about Android

3 hrs.

It wasn?t until this spring that I made the switch from iPhone to Android. Before then, I had put my iPhone aside for days at a time while I tested a new Android device, but I always went back to my iPhone. Frankly, I never really gave Android a chance.

Finally, the slow, 3G data speeds drove me to switch full-time to the Galaxy S II Skyrocket. And with all of the important apps I use now available on Android, that was no longer a?barrier.

Two weeks ago, I made the switch back???to the faster, bigger iPhone 5???because I assumed that, as a long-time iPhone user, I would enjoy it far more now that it, too, had LTE speeds. And there?s much to like about my new phone but, much to my surprise, I really miss Android. In fact, after a few weeks with my new iPhone 5, I realize that I like Android better.

1. Widgets
It wasn?t until I didn?t have weather on my home screen that realized how often I check it. Should I take an umbrella? Is the high 70 or higher (the cut off for pants versus shorts in our house)? I also had my family calendar and favorite music app loaded there. Yes, I could just tap an icon on my home screen, but I love the immediate gratification of widgets.

2. Notification Center
It's certainly handy to check text messages, incoming important mail, tweets and other notifications from a pull-down within virtually any app. But iPhone stops there. With my Android phone, I also had direct access to frequently used settings, like turning on and off GPS and Bluetooth to save the?battery life, as well as the settings app. With iPhone, I need to browse to and open settings where everything is buried a couple of layers deep.?

3. Automatic App Updates
Every day, at least one of the more than 100 apps I have loaded on my iPhone needs updating manually. With Android it happens automatically, unless the app privileges change. You simply get a notification.

4. Micro USB Charging
I was never a fan of the old Apple connector, but I was disappointed when Apple chose to go with Lightning over micro USB, the connector Android and many other devices use. Yes, Lightning has technical benefits over micro USB, like the ability to output video through a Lightning-to-HDMI cable (when that becomes available), but I was never without a charging cable with micro USB.

5. Maps
I used Google Maps on my Android phone all the time???for local search, traffic, turn-by-turn spoken navigation and transit directions. So, like many others, I was really disappointed by the poor quality of Apple Maps. Apple has apologized to users and has even created a new section in the App Store pointing people to better map applications. I just put a link to the Google Maps mobile site on my home screen. Still, I?d love to see Google Maps back as an option.

Convert a Mason Jar Into a Spill Proof Cup [Clever Uses]

Convert a Mason Jar Into a Spill Proof CupMason jars are sturdy, cheap, and make interesting glassware if you're going for a country or hipster aesthetic. By drilling a hole in a jar lid and adding a rubber grommet you can also convert one into a tough spill proof cup.

It's also great if you're one of those parents who avoids plastics or if you need a way to carry your DIY Frappuccino. Household weblog Little Bit Funky notes that all you need to do is drill a ?-inch hold in the lid, slide your grommet in the lid, and perhaps run it through the dishwasher a time or two if any residue is on the grommet. The grommet should fit a standard drinking straw.

Mali Islamists step up threats as France pushes for war

BAMAKO (Reuters) - Al Qaeda-linked Islamists in Mali threatened on Saturday to "open the doors of hell" for French citizens if France kept pushing for a war to retake the rebel-held north.

The renewed threats against French hostages and expatriates came ahead of a summit of French-speaking nations in Congo, where President Francois Hollande was expected to urge the rapid deployment of an African-led force to rout the Islamists.

The U.N. Security Council called on Friday for an intervention plan to be drawn up within 45 days after passing a French-drafted resolution to revive attempts to end the crisis.

"If he continues to throw oil on the fire, we will send him the pictures of dead French hostages in the coming days," said Oumar Ould Hamaha, a spokesman for Islamist group MUJWA, in an apparent reference to four French nationals seized in neighboring northern Niger in 2010.

"He will not be able to count the bodies of French expatriates across West Africa and elsewhere," Hamaha said by telephone.

MUJWA is among the Islamist groups that have controlled the northern two-thirds of Mali since fighters swept the territory in April following a coup in the capital Bamako.

Regional and western powers are now mulling an intervention to retake the zone, with former colonial ruler France seeking swift military action by regional bloc ECOWAS.

The U.N. Security Council urged African regional groups and the United Nations to come up with an intervention plan, which it could then consider.

Al Qaeda's north African wing has threatened repeatedly to kill French hostages if Paris tries to mount a military intervention in Mali.

Seven workers for French firm Areva were seized in northern Niger in 2010, and all but four have since been released.

Hamaha said that Islamists in the Sahara desert were largely funded by ransom payments from France and other western nations

"The top country who finances the jihadis is France," he said, adding that MUJWA could try to kidnap Hollande himself. "I wonder what the international community would say if we took the French president hostage."

70% of Title 1 CA schools are below fed standards - California's ...

October 12, 2012: As reported in today's EdSource by Kathryn Baron and John Fensterwald, "a record seven out of 10 California schools receiving federal Title 1 aid now fall under sanctions under the No Child Left Behind Law."

...Parents wouldn?t know that from looking at the?School Quality Snapshot, a snazzy two-page graphic summary of every school?s performance that the Department of Education released yesterday. It includes standardized test results, API scores, records on student suspensions and expulsions, even physical fitness test results (go here to search for?your favorite school?s report). [NB: where it says "Enter part of school name," enter only the city name; e.g., Eureka, not Eureka High -- program glitch.] What?s not included is whether the school is in Program Improvement, the formal name for the much disliked NCLB penalties.

Torlakson?made it clear the state is downplaying Program Improvement while it waits to hear from the U.S. Department of Education on whether the state?s request for a waiver from NCLB has been approved.?

?California?s request for a waiver from the requirements of NCLB is still pending,? Torlakson said in a press release. ?While we?re waiting for the flexibility we need, we?re not going to allow a flawed system to distract us from the work we?re doing to help schools improve.?

As Sharon Noguchi wrote in the San Jose Mercury News:

...?Even while more schools are meeting state targets, more of them are missing federal ones. That's because the state measures year-to-year improvement in achievement, while the federal system looks only at proficiency, or how many children are at or above grade level. And its demands for the proportion of students expected to meet that benchmark rise steeply every year. For 2011-12, about 78 percent of students had to test proficient in math and English.

By the standards of the No Child Left Behind Act, only 26 percent of California schools met federal targets. That's a drop from 35 percent last year, largely because that target was raised by 11 percentage points last year.

Baron explains: ...Passed by Congress a decade ago, NCLB requires 100 percent proficiency by 2014, for every subgroup of students in every school, including students with disabilities, English learners, low-income students, and significant racial and ethnic groups. The bar has been raised every year; for the current year, between 78 and 80 percent of students must be proficient on CSTs in math and English language arts. Only 26 percent of all 9,905 schools and 18 percent of Title I schools made those targets. Most of those were wealthier schools with fewer subgroups.

?As the Annual Measurable Objectives (yearly targets) got higher and higher,? said [WestEd's director of Assessment & Standards Development Services Stanley] Rabinowitz,??the system was rigged against diverse schools and large schools, and California has a lot of those. Moving forward we need to think about what?s the next generation of accountability systems that are fairer and more appropriate for the conditions we?re dealing with.?...

Wing Commander lead reveals Star Citizen | bit-gamer.net

Wing Commander lead reveals Star Citizen

Chris Roberts is famous for the Wing Commander series. He returns to the games industry after an absence of 12 years.

Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts is returning to the games industry and has unveiled his new title, a big budget hardware-heavy PC space sim called Star Citizen.

The game will be a return to the space combat simulators Roberts is famous for, having worked on both the Wing Commander series and Freelancer. He is aiming to fund it through a mixture of private investment and crowd funding with a target budget of $10m-$12m.

Star Citizen will set out to tax modern PC gaming rigs and Roberts intends to bring back a hardware-challenging mentality to the PC gaming scene and to help bring back the space sim genre.

'The traditional publishers don't believe in PC or Space Sims. Venture Capitalists only want to back mobile or social gaming startups. I say they're wrong,' says Roberts on Star Citizen's crowd funding page. 'I say that there is a large audience of PC gamers that want sophisticated games built for their platform.'

In terms of funding, Roberts is seeking between $2m-$4m through crowdfunding which his new company, Cloud Imperium Games, is handling directly as opposed to going through a platform like Kickstarter. The project has already raised more than $120,000.

Star Citizen is approximately two years away from being finished according to Roberts. When it is launched, he intends it to have a similar monetisation model to the Guild Wars games with players required to buy the game but then play online for free.

'I want to make a game again. I feel like I've got something to say,' Roberts told GamesIndustry International. 'The changes in the technology in the industry will allow me to do a much more immersive experience. The original Wing Commander was always about the immersion.'

Roberts claims that Star Wars has influenced almost everything he's done since seeing the film as a 'wide eyed eight-year-old'. He left the games industry in 2000 following the sale of his studio, Digital Anvil, to Microsoft and after directing a film adaptation of Wing Commander has since had a successful career producing films. He has a producer credit for films including the 2004 Punisher film, Lord of War and Lucky Number Slevin.

The Church?s Nature as Explained by the Second Vatican Council

?

This week we celebrate the opening of the Second Vatican Council. Since that time, the Church?s faithful and others have encountered diverse, sometimes conflicting explanations about the Council?s work. In some instances the diversity is well-founded because it is based on reasonable interpretations of the texts produced by the Council?s labors. However, other descriptions of the Council?s work are problematic because they reinvent or revise the history of the Council and the fruits of its labor; moreover, the accompanying interpretations produced by this second category of descriptions of the Conciliar documents are flawed because the interpretation fails to take stock of all the documents that concern related issues. As one trained in the law, I have come to understand the importance of texts and their meaning which are essential to an objective comprehension of what they signify and what they do not. The significance of texts is important to both theology, philosophy, literature, history and the law.

One of the major disagreements over the work of the Council concerns the nature of the Church and how her members are to interact with and to relate to one another. What is essential to minimizing or eliminating this conflict is to read together the several documents issued by the Council that address this subject.

The Council heralded the dignity of the human person and the societies to which the individual person belongs in several of its documents?texts which reveal the intent, objectives, and contexts of the Council?s work. In the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, Gaudium et Spes (GS), the Council Fathers offered an important expression relevant to this posting, i.e., it is the dignity of the human person that establishes the foundation for relationship?relationship with others, with the world, and with the Church. The crucial theme of relationship, and therefore the nature of the Church, is reflected in Jesus?s exhortation found in John 15:5, ?I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.? John 15:5 ?

Regarding the Church?s nature, the Council Fathers agreed that the Church is a family constituted by Christ to be a society that is established on relationships and is directed to the purposes just mentioned in the temporal and eternal spheres. Again, the image of the vine and its branches suitably explains this. As a leaven for the ?soul for human society,? the Church relies on the ?talents and industry? of her individual members. How she does this is explained in the several documents explaining the relationships amongst the clergy (including the bishops), men and women religious and consecrated, and the laity.

Many questions about what the Conciliar documents mean must be addressed by objectively reading the texts individually and, then, together. This seems to be an obvious and promising approach, but all too often texts, and the common or related themes that they address, are read and, therefore, understood in a fragmented fashion. Consequently, their authentic meanings can be lost as a result of this fragmentation. In the final analysis, all relevant documents of the Council are critical to the task is seeking the best possible understanding of what the Council said and what it did not say. When this approach consisting of a careful reading and consideration of the relevant documents has been neglected, understandings of the Council?s work product are flawed. This becomes acutely patent when the nature of the Church is the question under investigation.

It has been almost a half century since the Council concluded its work on December 8, 1965. Since then, Catholics have encountered explanations of the meaning of the Council by fellow Catholics and others which are based less on the texts of the Council and more on the ambiguous spirit of Vatican II. The documents which the Council fathers produced are, in fact, the authentic source of the spirit of the Council because they are the product of the Council that was presented to Pope Paul VI for his approval. Still, there are occasions when some opinions argue that the spirit of the counsel is elsewhere. It might be in the notes of certain bishops or the journals of periti and other documentation that are extrinsic to the Constitutions, Declarations, and Decrees issued by the Council and approved by the pope. These arguments are problematic when the ?spirit? they project constitute a revision of the fruits of the Council as recorded in the official texts and a reading-together of all the texts that address the same subject matter.

When the Church?s nature is the topic of discussion or investigation, the documents which must be examined together are: the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, (Lumen Gentium); the document on the bishops (Christus Dominus); the texts on priests (Presbyterorum Ordinis) and priestly formation (Optatam Totius); the document on religious and consecrated life (Perfectae Caritatis); and, the text on the laity (Apostolicam Actuositatem).

While these texts when viewed individually demonstrate something about the diversity of the Church?s members, reading them together demonstrates that the Church is a unity of holiness. This means that each class (clerical, religious, or lay) has and exercises different responsibilities. Nonetheless, the call to holiness requires that all disciples?clerical, religious, or lay?must seek the virtue of love and perfect it. Living a well-grounded life based on the sacraments is an important step in responding to the call to holiness, in being faithful to one?s discipleship, and in nurturing and defending the nature of the Church.

The Church and her members also need a requisite measure of freedom to accept and exercise these rights and duties. Here we must turn to the Declaration on Religious Liberty, Dignitatis Humane Personae (DH), to understand as best we can the role of freedom in the nature of the Church which is the means by which her members exercise their prudent judgment to seek the truth and justice by which the Church exists in the temporal world. Significantly, it is this text which asserts that ?the one true religion subsists in the Catholic and Apostolic Church? by which God spreads this religion among all people. But the freedom of which the Council Fathers spoke is not simply individual, it must also be a freedom of the Community?the Church, the People of God, the Body of Christ. The freedom, then, that properly belongs to the Church is not private, rather, it is one that must be exercised in public for the individual believer and for the community of believers, i.e., the Church. It would be contrary to the nature of the Church if one or some of her members take and defend a position, internally or externally to the community of believers, that brings harm to the rest of the community or any of its members. This would not be an exercise of freedom or conscience, but it would be a threat that undermines the Body of Christ and antithetical to the nature of the Church.

Don't Let Your Training Get Derailed with Impossible to Understand ...

There are all kinds of singing schools in UK. The truly reliable ones are the ones where they actually teach you how to sing by showing you physically. Watch out for the ones which rip you by giving you impossible to understand instructions which are chock a block with jargon. If they cannot demonstrate physically, then stay away. Most important of all you must realize that your voice is unique. It can be made to achieve undreamt of heights with proper training. So check out the credentials of the teachers before you trust your voice and dreams to anyone.

Adults and children can benefit from the guidance of a qualified, experienced professional. Students should consider both private and group instruction depending on their goals. Unless the singing coach of UK under whom you train is careful about teaching you correct singing techniques, you can do incalculable damage to your vocal chords. These techniques should never be the kind which goes against nature such those which require incorrect posture, breathing, phonation, throat and mouth position, registration shifts and/or vowel modification. Nature has a nasty way of getting its own back when you least expect it and the damages might show up as tonal defects like tremolo, a tendency to sing off-key, excessively nasal, sharp, foggy, hard or weak tone, or even a lack of flexibility.

It is vital to follow a correct diet which has less harmful reflux elements such as fewer acids, caffeine, spicy and greasy foods. Smoking is a very strict no-no if you want to promote a healthy voice. Gargling with warm water and salt after meals will help heal vocal folds. Taking long periods of rest without whispering will give the voice a necessary break when you have overstrained it for some reason. Trust only the teacher who is aware of the ways a singer can damage his/her voice. The best tip that any teacher of a singing course will give you is to learn to sing with your heart not just your voice.

Massachusetts Special Education Teacher Killed in Auto Accident ...

A woman working as a special education teacher in Massachusetts for 25 years was killed after an automobile accident involving a pickup truck. The accident occurred as the woman was crossing an intersection and failed to make a stop. Her Mazda vehicle collided with the pickup truck as the truck was crossing in a westbound direction. The woman attempted to swerve away from the oncoming pickup truck but collided with it.

Rescue crews had to use special equipment to remove the woman from her vehicle because of the impact. A passenger riding with the woman was treated at a medical facility for minor injuries and released shortly after treatment. An investigation was still being conducted to determine the factors that led to the accident.

A common mistake that usually leads to an car wreck like this one is when a driver attempts to cross an intersection too early, causing a side-impact collision in the process. Sometimes there may be some confusion whether a person has the right of way to cross the intersection. This confusion can lead to an auto accident causing serious or fatal injuries to the victims. Accidents like this one can easily be avoided if you yield to other vehicles that approach the intersection. If you allow other vehicles to cross the intersection or wait for them to yield to you, your safety will not be compromised.

In other cases, accidents like this can be caused when a person ignores the stop sign completely and does not stop for other vehicles at the intersection. If they are driving at a high rate of speed, it is possible for a car accident to occur. Depending on the speed of that vehicle, the impact and subsequent injuries could be very serious.

Nobody?s life should ever be threatened because of another person?s actions behind the wheel. ?

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) ? Headed to prison for the rest of his life, Jerry Sandusky leaves behind a trail of human and legal wreckage that could take years to clear away.

Victims face a lifetime of healing. Penn State is laboring under severe NCAA penalties. And at least four civil lawsuits have been filed against a university shamed by scandal, with more likely to come.

If Sandusky felt any remorse or pity for anyone but himself, he didn't show it at his sentencing Tuesday. Instead, speaking in court for the first time since his arrest last November, the former Penn State assistant football coach delivered a disjointed and defiant monologue in which he denied committing "disgusting acts" against children and cast himself as the victim.

Sitting behind him were the actual victims ? the young men who testified that Sandusky serially molested them when they were children, using his position of influence and authority to gain their trust and then violate their innocence.

"I am troubled with flashbacks of his naked body, something that will never be erased from my memory," said a victim who was 13 when Sandusky lured him into a Penn State shower and forced him to touch the ex-coach. Another victim told Sandusky he suffered from "deep painful wounds that you caused and had been buried in the garden of my heart for many years."

Sandusky, 68, was sentenced to at least 30 years in prison for sexually abusing 10 boys, a scandal that brought disgrace to Penn State and triggered the downfall of his former boss, Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno.

While the criminal case against Sandusky is over, the fallout will persist. With Penn State facing enormous civil liability, the university has said it wants to "privately, expeditiously and fairly" settle with Sandusky's victims.

Ben Andreozzi, an attorney for one of them, said Tuesday the university will need to do more: "It's important they understand before we get into serious discussions about money, that there are other, noneconomic issues. We need apologies. We need changes in policy. This isn't just about money."

An investigation commissioned by Penn State and led by former FBI Director Louis Freeh concluded that Paterno and other top officials covered up allegations against Sandusky for more than a decade to avoid bad publicity.

After the report came out last summer, the NCAA fined Penn State a record $60 million, barred the football team from postseason play for four years, cut the number of scholarships it can award, and erased 14 years of victories for Paterno, stripping him of his standing as the winningest coach in the history of big-time college football.

Two university administrators, Gary Schultz and Tim Curley, are awaiting trial in January on charges they failed to properly report suspicions about Sandusky and lied to the grand jury that investigated him.

Given the chance to speak before learning his sentence, Sandusky chose to focus on himself.

"In my heart I did not do these alleged disgusting acts," he said.

He described instances in which he helped children and did good works in the community, adding: "I've forgiven, I've been forgiven. I've comforted others, I've been comforted. I've been kissed by dogs, I've been bit by dogs. I've conformed, I've also been different. I've been me. I've been loved, I've been hated."

About the only thing that didn't come out of his mouth was an apology. Mental health professionals say it's not unusual for sex offenders to avoid taking responsibility, either in a bid to get out of legal trouble or because they're in psychological denial. Prosecutor Joe McGettigan dismissed Sandusky's comments as "a masterpiece of banal self-delusion, completely untethered from reality."

Sandusky had easy access to children through The Second Mile, the charity for troubled youths he founded in the 1970s. One question left unanswered is how many more possible victims have come forward since Sandusky's arrest last November ? and how many have kept quiet.

Mitchell Garabedian, a Boston attorney who represents a 40-year-old man who says he was molested by Sandusky as a 16-year-old high school football player, said he believes Sandusky's pedophilia goes back decades, and urged the attorney general's office to consider another criminal prosecution.

"In all probability, he sexually molested hundreds of children over the course of decades," Garabedian said. "He was cunning, clever and conniving."

A spokesman for state Attorney General Linda Kelly declined comment on whether Sandusky could face additional charges, citing an ongoing grand jury investigation. But the statute of limitations would likely bar prosecutors from going after Sandusky for older crimes. Current Pennsylvania law allows them to file charges until a child victim's 50th birthday ? but only for cases involving victims born Aug. 27, 1984 or later.

With Sandusky's lawyers preparing an appeal of his conviction and sentence, it might be wise for prosecutors to line up additional alleged victims ? but only if they are willing to go through a high-profile trial, said Kristen Houser of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape.

"This case looks like it's over as of today, but you never know where things will take a turn," she said.
