News stories regarding the Obama daughters? purported vacation destinations appear to be disappearing from the Internet at the request of the White House, a repeat of a similar occurrence that happened when Malia Obama took a trip to Mexico last year.

Idaho?s KMVT-TV deleted a story about Sasha and Malia Obama taking a ski trip to Sun Valley, Idaho, during their spring break this week, and Us magazine did the same with a report about first lady Michelle Obama and her daughters going to the Bahamas. Breitbart News reported Monday that the Obama girls were going to the Bahamas and named the resort where they were said to be staying.

The White House did not immediately return a request for comment from TheBlaze about the deleted stories, but Breitbart posted a statement from Michelle Obama?s communications director affirming that the KMVT report was pulled at the administration?s request.

?From the beginning of the administration, the White House has asked news outlets not to report on or photograph the Obama children when they are not with their parents and there is no vital news interest. We have reminded outlets of this request in order to protect the privacy and security of these girls,? first lady communications director Kristina Schake said, an identical statement to the one given after Malia Obama went to Mexico last year.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) on Wednesday ripped the president for sending his daughters on vacation for spring break after so many dire warnings about budget sequestration.

Speaking on an Iowa radio show, King was responding to a caller who said watching the Obama girls go on vacation was ?hard to stomach.?

?You?re on point and on the mark all the way through,? King said, in remarks flagged by the liberal site ThinkProgress. ?You?re right on the president. I mean, he needs to show some austerity himself?he sent the daughters to spring break in Mexico a year ago. That was at our expense too. And now to the Bahamas at one of the most expensive places there. That is the wrong image to be coming out of the White House.?

It?s custom for the president?s family to pay for their own vacation expenses, while costs for security and White House staff are picked up by taxpayers.

FCC confident in its mobile phone radiation limits, seeks second opinions

Cast your memory back to last summer. Sweep away memories of iPhone 5 leaks galore, and you might remember that the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) asked the FCC to reevaluate its radiation limits for mobile phones. Now a few seasons later, the FCC has finally wrapped up a report that responds to the GAO, and there are no changes to its RF radiation levels in sight because it feels comfortable with its current caps. "We continue to have confidence in the current exposure limits, and note that more recent international standards have a similar basis," reads the report. However, given that its guidelines were adopted in 1996, new research on radiation and the proliferation of mobile devices, the FCC would like some feedback regarding its restrictions. It's put out a call for comments from concerned parties and even federal health and safety bodies.

Though the freshly-released document didn't rock the proverbial boat, it made one change worth noting. The pinna (outer ear) is now classified an extremity, which means the FCC allows devices to hit the tissue with more radiation. Feel like poring through 201 pages of regulatory minutiae? A smartphone solution to childhood obesity

The best weapon in the battle against obesity may already be in the hands of children and teenagers.

That?s the thinking behind the work of several researchers and technologists around the country who hope to turn cell phones into devices that can help young people make healthier food and lifestyle choices.

A recent Pew Internet study found that 78 percent of teens now have a cell phone, and almost half of them ? 47 percent -- own smartphones with computing capability.

?It?s interesting because most people think using technology is part of the problem,? said Dr. Susan Woolford of the Pediatric Comprehensive Weight Management Center at the University of Michigan, pointing to video games and other uses of technology that have made teens more sedentary. ?We?re actually using this new technology to help us.?

Woolford leads a team that sends highly tailored and targeted text messages to obese adolescents to help them change their behaviors. The messages urge teens to reduce their time in front of TV and computer screens, eat a healthy breakfast and more fruits and vegetables, and reduce the number of sweets and sugary beverages in their diets.

The initial test program had bout 25 volunteer participants -- overweight teens who are participating in university's weight management program.

To get the most effective messages to individual teens, participants in the pilot program filled out an online survey with questions about their activity level, what kind of support they have, what kind of foods they prefer and what inspires them to lose weight.

From there, the team has developed a database of 100 or so unique automated messages that are sent daily. Their goal is to get the right message at the right time to the right person.

?We aren?t going to suggest you play basketball as an activity if you said your interest was in water sports,? Woolford said.

Or if a teen prefers dairy for breakfast, the team?s text might suggest low-fat yogurt.

Woolford said the feedback from the participants has been crucial in shaping the messages.

She pointed to a text suggesting alternative snacks that said, ?Instead of ice cream try frozen yogurt today." But some teens in the study were quick to point out when they see the words ?ice cream? in a message they don?t see see the healthy alternative that comes later.

So, Woolford said, the text message simply became "Try yogurt this morning."

?I think technology is definitely going to help us,? she said, ?It?s not just sending a text message, it?s send the right text message. And if we pay attention to the content the success is greater.?

In Massachusetts, Dr. Nicolas Oreskovic is using another common smartphone feature ? the Global Positioning System ? to study where in a city and when young people are active.

?What urban spaces do they use for physical activity and what spaces they do not use for physical activity?? Oreskovic asked.

Oreskovic and his team based at Massachusetts General Hospital?s Center for Child and Adolescent Health Policy had teens in Revere, Mass. wear GPS devices on their wrists and accelerometers on their hips for several months over three seasons to collect data on the location and activity of their daily routines.

By plotting the results on a city map, Oreskovic noticed that children tend to be active in outdoor spaces like parks, playgrounds, streets and sidewalks rather than indoor spaces like their home and school. He also charted when they are most active and where and when they walked to a park or playground.

Oreskovic said he hopes such studies help urban planners design cities and towns to promote a more healthy and active lifestyle in children.

If city officials had good data about how children use their sidewalks, parks and open areas, they can redesign communities with the right walking paths to the right parks, Oreskovic said. Decisions could be made using scientific data, which in turn should encourage more use of a city's parks, playscapes and open space.

Oreskovic said a next step could be to use location mapping to help teens find healthy food options and places to spend their time. The GPS on their cellphones and texting technology could be combined to point teens to a safe park to play or suggest a healthier restaurant near their favorite fast food joint.

?I think the wave of the future in these not traditional areas,? Oreskovic said. ?Intervention in schools has had a limited impact. These novel technology areas are where we can individualize obesity counseling may be helpful.?

Technology is making great strides in the fight against obesity according to Dr. Philip Schauer, director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. Schauer said hundreds of applications on mobile and desktop and computerized devices, like smart watches and digital jewelry, are being developed to help users maintain a healthy lifestyle.

?Some of these smart watches can help us with weight, they can keep track of the steps day we take each day, the calories burning and track our weight on daily basis," Schauer said.

"There?s all kinds of apps, more and more come out each day and it?s hard to keep track of them,? Schauer said. ?I even think they are working on one where you can take a picture of the food eating with the camera on your smartphone and an app tells you how many calories it is.?

Children Of Deployed Military Parents More At Risk For Alcohol ...

Military - Yellow Ribbon

By Albany Tribune -- (March 28, 2013)

In 2010, almost 2 million American children had at least one parent in active military duty. A new University of Iowa study suggests that deployment of a parent puts these children at an increased risk for drinking alcohol and using drugs.

Using data from a statewide survey of sixth, eighth, and 11th-grade students in Iowa, the researchers found an increase in 30-day alcohol use, binge drinking, using marijuana and other illegal drugs, and misusing prescription drugs among children of deployed or recently returned military parents compared to children in nonmilitary families. The increased risk was consistent across all age groups. The findings are published online in the journal Addiction.

?We worry a lot about the service men and women and we sometimes forget that they are not the only ones put into harm?s way by deployment?their families are affected, too,? says Stephan Arndt, Ph.D., UI professor of psychiatry in biostatistics and senior study author. ?Our findings suggest we need to provide these families with more community support.?

Arndt and colleagues at the Iowa Consortium for Substance Abuse Research and Evaluation and the UI Injury Prevention Research Center, examined data from the 2010 Iowa Youth Survey (IYS) to investigate whether military deployment of a parent was associated with children?s substance use.

The survey, developed by the consortium in 1999, is administered by the state and conducted every two years. Participating students answer questions online about attitudes and experiences with alcohol, drugs, and violence, as well as students? perceptions of their peers, family, school, and community. Of all sixth-, eighth-, and 11th-grade students enrolled in Iowa schools in 2010, 69 percent (78,240 students) completed the IYS.

Students were also asked if they had a parent in the military and about the parent?s deployment status. The researchers focused their analysis on the 59,395 responses that indicated a parent in the military, either deployed (775, 1.3 percent) or recently returned (983, 1.7 percent), or not in the military (57,637, 97 percent).

?Looking at the Iowa Youth Survey, we discovered we were right in regard to our idea that parental deployment would increase the risk for substance use behaviors in children. In fact, the numbers suggested we were a lot more right than we wanted to be,? Arndt says.

?For example, sixth-graders in nonmilitary families had binge drinking rates of about 2 percent. That jumps up to about 7 percent for the children of deployed or recently returned parents?a three-to-four-fold increase in the raw percentage.?

The study showed that rates for drinking alcohol in the past 30 days were 7 to 9 percentage points higher for children of deployed or recently returned parents across all grades, while rates for binge drinking (having had five or more drinks of alcohol in a row) were 5 to 8 percentage points higher for children of deployed parents across all grades. Marijuana use was also higher in children of deployed parents, but the difference in risk was larger for older students; for sixth-grade students the risk difference was almost 2 percentage points, for 11th-grade students it was almost 5 percentage points higher.

Living arrangements matter too

A second important and unexpected finding was the relationship between parental deployment, disruption of children?s living arrangements, and increased risk of substance use.

?When at least one parent is deployed, there is a measurable percentage of children who are not living with their natural parents,? Arndt says. ?Some of these children go to live with a relative, but some go outside of the family, and that change in these children?s living arrangements grossly affected their risk of binge drinking and marijuana use.?

The study found that for children who were not living with a parent or relative, those with a deployed parent had a risk of binge drinking that was 42 percentage points higher than a student from a nonmilitary family. In comparison, children with a deployed parent who still were living with a parent had a risk of binge drinking that was about 8 percentage points higher than children of nonmilitary families who were living with a parent.

?Deployment is going to be disruptive anyway, which is probably why we see the overall increased risk of substance use in these children. And then for those children where parental deployment means they end up living outside of the family, it?s a double whammy,? Arndt says. ?The results suggest that when a parent deploys, it may be preferable to place a child with a family member and try to minimize the disruption of the child?s living arrangements.?

Iowa?s military population may be more affected

Because the study surveyed only Iowa children, the nature of Iowa?s military population may also affect the results, Arndt notes.

In Iowa, along with Vermont, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, the largest portion of military personnel serve with the Reserve or the National Guard. These groups of military personnel live in civilian communities rather than on military bases and may have limited access to support services and resources designed to help military families.

?States like Iowa that have a large proportion of National Guard may be more affected by this increased risk for children,? Arndt says.

Although the UI study findings may be specific to families of National Guardsmen and women, Arndt notes that the results agree with previous research that focused on risky behavior for children of deployed military men and women in Washington state, which unlike Iowa has a large active duty population.

?I think our findings suggest, first, that people need to be aware that for service members and their families this is a real phenomenon, and one that should receive close attention,? Arndt says. ?I would also think that schools should have a heightened awareness that children from deployed parents may need extra help.?

Cosmic crash 2022: Space probes will smash into asteroid in nine years

Cosmic crash 2022: American and European scientists are planning to crash a spacecraft into a nearby asteroid in 2022 to analyze the interior of the cosmic rock.

The ambitious European-led Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment mission, or AIDA, is slated to launch in 2019 to send two spacecraft ? one built by scientists in the U.S, and the other by the European Space Agency ? on a three-year voyage to the asteroid Didymos and its companion. Didymos has no chance of impacting the Earth, which makes it a great target for this kind of mission, scientists involved in the mission said in a presentation Tuesday (March 19) here at the 44th annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.

Didymos is actually a binary asteroid system consisting of two separate space rocks bound together by gravity. The main asteroid is enormous, measuring 2,625 feet (800 meters) across. It is orbited by a smaller asteroid ?about 490 feet (150 m).

The Didymos asteroid setup is an intriguing target for the AIDA mission because it will give scientists their first close look at a binary space rock system while also yielding new insights into ways to deflect dangerous asteroids that could pose an impact threat to the Earth.?

"Binary systems are quite common," said Andy Rivkin, a scientist at Johns Hopkins' Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md., working on the U.S. portion of AIDA project. "This will be our first rendezvous with a binary system."

In 2022, the Didymos asteroids will be about 6.8 million miles (11 million km) from the Earth, during a close approach, which is why AIDA scientists have timed their mission for that year.

Rivkin and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins' Applied Physics Laboratory are building DART (short for Double Asteroid Redirection Test), one of the two spacecraft making up the tag team AIDA mission. Like its acronym suggests, the DART probe crash directly into the smaller Didymos asteroid while travelling at 14,000 mph (22,530 km/h), creating a crater during an impact that will hopefully sending the space rock slightly off course, Rivkin said.

The European Space Agency is building the second AIDA spacecraft, which is called the Asteroid Impact Monitor (or AIM). AIM will observe the impact from a safe distance, and the probe's data will be used with other data collected by telescopes on Earth to understand exactly what the impact did to the asteroid.

"AIM is the usual shoebox satellite," ESA researcher Jens Biele, ?who works on the AIM spacecraft, said. "It's nothing very fancy."

AIDA scientists hope their mission will push the smaller Didymos asteroid off course by only a few millimeters. The small space rock orbits the larger, primary Didymos asteroid once every 12 hours.

Obama makes impassioned plea for gun control legislation

By Steve Holland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama attempted on Thursday to inject fresh momentum into efforts to pass gun-control legislation, pleading with U.S. lawmakers not to forget those shot to death in Newtown, Connecticut three months ago.

Amid signs that he may have to accept a scaled-down version of gun legislation, Obama sounded a note of frustration in calling upon Americans to demand action from the U.S. Congress in the weeks ahead.

He said the legislation's opponents, the powerful U.S. gun lobby led by the National Rifle Association, are "doing everything they can" to derail the effort barely 100 days after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, in which a gunman killed 20 children, six staff members and then himself.

"The entire country pledged we would do something about it and that this time would be different. Shame on us if we've forgotten. I haven't forgotten those kids. Shame on us if we've forgotten," said Obama, appearing at the White House with mothers of children who had been shot to death.

The gunman in Newtown, Adam Lanza, fired 154 rounds in less than 5 minutes, selecting high capacity magazines from a home arsenal stocked with swords, knives and a cache of guns, officials said Thursday.

Despite events like this, a grassroots organizing effort by Obama supporters and a high-profile advertising campaign funded by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to keep up the pressure, gun legislation has been stalled on Capitol Hill in recent weeks.

The best chance of success for gun-control advocates is that Congress will approve universal background checks for gun purchasers and tougher penalties for gun trafficking.

Less likely to pass are bans on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips, two of the main proposals to emerge from Vice President Joe Biden's gun violence task force, formed by Obama after the Newtown shootings.

'JUST THE BEGINNING'

Biden seemed to acknowledged the challenge when he said on a conference call on Wednesday organized by Mayors Against Illegal Guns that the administration will keep pressing for action regardless of what Congress does in the immediate future.

"Let me say this as clearly as I can: This is just the beginning," Biden said.

Obama had hoped at the outset of his second term to use his re-election mandate to make rapid progress on three major issues: gun violence, deficit-reduction and immigration reform.

All are moving slowly, however.

Immigration may offer the best prospect for action as Republicans seek to attract more Hispanic Americans who voted overwhelming for Obama and his Democrats in the 2012 elections.

Republicans insist that any pathway to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants be preceded by certification that U.S. borders are secure.

The biggest stumbling block to an immigration bill concerns creation of a guest-worker program to allow immigrants to cross the U.S.-Mexican border legally for temporary jobs.

U.S. labor unions, which worry such a program would lead to a loss of jobs for Americans, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have yet to arrive at a formula acceptable to both. Their agreement is considered crucial to bringing Congress along.

Obama has said he is encouraged by the progress, and he believes the dispute over the guest-worker program can be resolved. After first declaring the U.S.-Mexican border sufficiently secure, Obama now says it can be improved, a position that may permit him to make a deal with Republicans.

"I'm actually optimistic about this, in part because I think both Republicans as well as Democrats are now recognizing that it's the right thing to do," Obama told Univision, a Spanish-language network, in an interview on Wednesday.

Obama's attempt to negotiate a "grand bargain" aimed at reducing the U.S. budget deficit is facing old-fashioned political gridlock and could collapse into a partisan sinkhole.

In a fresh round of schmoozing to discuss this and other legislative items, Obama will dine with a dozen Republican senators on April 10, the second such meeting he will have held in his attempts to engage his political opponents.

TAXING THE RICH

Lawmakers are still bruised from a fight over $85 billion in automatic spending cuts that went into effect a month ago despite Obama's attempt to head them off.

Obama still wants what Republicans refused to give him in that budget fight, an increase in taxes on the wealthy by eliminating some deductions and loopholes. Republicans instead want to cut spending.

The White House struck a pessimistic note this week on the prospects for success given the Republican leadership's refusal to agree to raise more tax revenues.

"As long as Republicans are saying we're not going to ask the wealthiest and well-connected to pay a single dime to reduce our deficit, then it is hard to imagine that we're going to reach a compromise," White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday.

The difficulties in gaining passage of major legislation reflects the continued grip partisan politics holds on Washington, with the White House and Senate run by Democrats and the House of Representatives controlled by Republicans. This makes the 2014 midterm congressional elections of increasing importance.

"Look, it's what we all thought when Obama was re-elected," said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics. "There is just not going to be a lot of new legislation in Obama's second term, unless he wins the House in 2014, and even then it looks very, very tough."

Minn. train derailment causes oil spill

PARKERS PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -- Thousands of gallons of oil leaked onto frozen ground after a train carrying crude from Canada derailed Wednesday in western Minnesota.

The 94-car Canadian Pacific train was headed south near Parkers Prairie when it lost air pressure and went into an emergency braking mode, the Otter Tail County sheriff's office said. Fourteen tankers derailed. Three either leaked or spilled oil. No one was hurt, and a spokesman for the state's pollution control agency said crews were able to control the spill.

An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 gallons leaked onto the ground, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency spokesman Dan Olson said. The spill was contained in a field and ditch in a rural area, and the cold weather helped keep the spill contained and prevented oil from moving down the ditch or into the ground, Olson said.

One heavily damaged car spilled much of its 26,000-gallon load, Olson said. He said the oil was "just oozing out" in the cold.

Because the ground is frozen, there's no threat to water, Olson said. Initial recovery efforts likely will take a day or two, and excavations then will be done to determine if any oil leaked into the soil, he said.

The railroad was cleaning up the spill, Canadian Pacific spokesman Ed Greenberg said.

While the spill appeared to be under control from an ecological standpoint, it could play a role in the politics surrounding the Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport oil from tar sands in Canada to refineries in Texas. Environmentalists have criticized the proposal, saying that a pipeline could be prone to spills and would ensure that the carbon-laden tar sands are fully developed. A recent analysis from the State Department seemed to knock down one of their arguments, by saying that when it comes to global warming, shipping the oil by pipeline would release less pollution than using rail.

Loughner's parents hid shotgun from him, slew of new documents show

AFP - Getty Images, file

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

Jared Loughner hadn't been the same since he got fired from a job at a mall?in Tucson, his parents said. He had been expelled from college. After a visit from campus police, his parents decided to hide a shotgun that Loughner owned in the trunk of their car in the garage so he didn't have access to it in the house.

A slew of details about Loughner, 24 -- who has pleaded guilty to killing six people and wounding former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and a dozen others in a Jan. 8, 2011, shooting spree in Tucson -- emerged as authorities investigating the rampage released more than 2,700 pages of documents that they have compiled.

Among the thousands of interviews, police reports and survivors' statements released Wednesday, one theme was constant about Loughner, who has since been diagnosed with schizophrenia: As his father, Randy Loughner, told investigators at the time, he "just doesn't seem right lately."

Loughner was fired more than a year before the shooting, his father told investigators after the shooting, according to the documents. Trying to have a rational conversation with his son became more and more difficult after that, he said.

"Lost, lost and just didn't want to communicate with me," Randy Loughner said.

After Loughner was expelled, things got worse: Randy Loughner said his son felt harassed by campus police, who came to the Loughner home and asked if there were any firearms in the house. Loughner had bought a 12-gauge shotgun in 2008; at the recommendation of Pima Community College campus police, who recommended any firearms be taken away, they hid the shotgun and an antique weapon they owned.

"He had a shotgun. And I took it away," Randy Loughner told police. "They suggested that if I had any firearms, to take them away. And I did."

A former friend of Loughner's, Zachary Osler, was an employee at a store where Loughner later purchased a Glock handgun used in the Tucson rampage. Osler described the awkward encounter he had with Loughner.

"His response is nothing. Just a mute facial expression. And just like, he, he didn't care," Osler told investigators. He said the change in Loughner's personality made him uncomfortable to be around.?

"He would say he could dream and then control what he was doing while he was dreaming," Osler said, adding Loughner never mentioned Giffords in conversation to him.

Loughner's mother, Amy, felt her son's behavior was so odd that she tested him for drugs. Loughner kept a journal that was written in illegible script, his father said. Despite their concerns, Loughner's parents said they never sent him to get help and he had never been diagnosed as mentally ill.

On the morning of the shooting, Loughner's father said his son had been "acting strange." Loughner had taken his father's car early in the morning, returned home briefly, left again, then returned home once more before leaving on foot with a backpack.

Pima County Sheriff's Deputy T. Audetat Jr. wrote in his police report that when he arrived at the scene, he saw a man being held down by "two or three people". He handcuffed the shooter; in the shooter's pocket, in addition to two Glock magazines, fully loaded, he found a folding knife and a credit card and ID card, he said.?

He described what the shooter was wearing: black beanie, black hooded sweatshirt, khaki pants. Another deputy noticed he was wearing earplugs, he wrote in his report.

One of the victims of the shooting outside the Safeway supermarket, Ronald Barber, told police of the rampage, "I was laying on my right side and I could see the blood coming out. You know, and, uh, and all I remember is seeing the congresswoman with her back to me, on her side. On her right side, uh, with her head up against the window, you know, of the Safeway. And Daniel, um, who is our intern, saying, 'Stay with me, congresswoman, stay with me.'"

Once in the patrol car, Loughner pleaded the Fifth Amendment repeatedly, Deputy Audetat wrote. At the police station, Loughner said very little besides,?"I just want you to know that I'm the only person that knew about this," according to the deputy.

In his four-hour interview with authorities following the morning rampage, Loughner sat in restraints and was polite and cooperative with authorities, documents show. He asked to use the restroom at one point, saying thank you when he was permitted to. Although after a while he complained, "I'm about ready to fall over."

Loughner will spend the rest of his life behind bars but is not eligible for the death penalty because of his plea deal in the case. Giffords retired from her position in Congress a year after the shooting to focus on her recovery.

Serious Public Health Issue - Sunny Isle Shopping Center

I stopped by the golden arches at Sunny Isle Shopping Center for a burger and saw a notice on the glass door as I entered yesterday at about 4:30pm.

It stated (on a crudely photocopied, faded paper similar to a VI Drivers Licence application) that the Sunny Isle Shopping Center had been found by the Health Department to have had FECAL COLIFORMS well above the permitted limits in the drinking water produced by thier in-house water purification system. It went on to state that the higher than allowed results had been found on more than one occasion dating back to January 2013.

I didn't think much of it as I munched on my Big Mac Meal and slurped my soft drink which contained ICE made with WATER from the IN-HOUSE PURIFICATION SYSTEM.

Did I have a case of diarrhea this morning? Oh yes...I surely did and it wasn't pretty either.

WARNING: Don't drink the WATER or have ICE in your drinks at golden arches, the theater or any food service establishment at Sunny Isle Shopping Center. Taking it one step further, don't eat at the Sunny Isle Shopping Center at all since all cooking utensils and equipment whould have been washed with contaminated water.

We all know how lax enforcement of anything is here in the VI (except using a cell phone while driving), but public health should not be overlooked.

I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THEY HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM.

Study Shows Censorship On Sina Weibo Is A ?Sophisticated' And Very Speedy Operation

Sina WeiboKnown as the Twitter of China, Sina Weibo is also infamous in the West for the number of high profile users who have had tweets censored, including Kai-fu Lee. The former head of Google China, who was once booted off Sina and Tencent Weibo for three days, recently made a graph of how often his microblogging posts have been censored. Computer scientists Jed Crandall and Dan Wallach conducted a study on how quickly censorship on Sina Weibo can work, with findings reported by the BBC and originally published on arXiv.org. The two researchers, who believe their study is the first “real-time analysis of Weibo posts,” say they “found a landscape in which a post could be deleted as quickly as five minutes after being put online and where the censors appear not to work a regular day, but seem to take a break when China’s all-important 19:00 news comes on.” Censors work rapidly: most deletions happened within the first hour after a post had been made, with about five percent of deletions happening within the first eight minutes, and 30 percent in the first half hour. Nearly 90 percent were made within the first 24 hours. Crandall and Wallach spent 30 days tracking posts by 3,500 users on Sina Weibo. During that time, they write, 300 of the accounts, or 12 percent of the total, were deleted. Accounts that got censored the most often also had posts censored the most quickly, showing that they might be the target of more scrutiny. Though they could not estimate the exact number of people dedicated to deleting posts on Sina Weibo, the two computer scientists said that Sina Weibo would need to employ at least 4,000 censors every day if none of the process was automated. Crandall and Wallach called censorship a “sophisticated operation,” with “relatively sophisticated programmers who build their censorship tooling.” Automated systems appear to include keyword alerts for sensitive topics, as well as monitors for certain users who write frequently about sensitive issues. Launched in 2010, Sina Weibo has 300 million users, with about 100 million messages sent daily.

Fewer children mean longer life?

Mar. 27, 2013 ? New research into ageing processes, based on modern genetic techniques, confirms theoretical expectations about the correlation between reproduction and lifespan. Studies of birds reveal that those that have offspring later in life and have fewer broods live longer. And the decisive factor is telomeres, shows research from The University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Telomeres are the protective caps at the end of chromosomes. The length of telomeres influences how long an individual lives. Telomeres start off at a certain length, become shorter each time a cell divides, decline as the years pass by until the telomeres can no longer protect the chromosomes, and the cell dies. But the length of telomeres varies significantly among individuals of the same age. This is partly due to the length of the telomeres that has been inherited from the parents, and partly due to the amount of stress an individual is exposed to.

?This is important, not least for our own species, as we are all having to deal with increased stress,? says Angela Pauliny, Researcher from the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Gothenburg.

Researchers have studied barnacle geese, which are long-lived birds, the oldest in the study being 22 years old. The results show that geese, compared to short-lived bird species, have a better ability to preserve the length of their telomeres. The explanation is probably that species with a longer lifespan invest more in maintaining bodily functions than, for example, reproduction.

?There is a clear correlation between reproduction and ageing in the animal world. Take elephants, which have a long lifespan but few offspring, while mice, for example, live for a short time but produce a lot of offspring each time they try,? says Angela Pauliny.

The geese studied by researchers varied in age, from very young birds to extremely old ones. Each bird was measured twice, two years apart. One striking result was that the change in telomere length varied according to gender.

?The study revealed that telomeres were best-preserved in males. Among barnacle geese, the telomeres thus shorten more quickly in females, which in birds is the sex with two different gender chromosomes. Interestingly, it is the exactl opposite in humans,? says Angela Pauliny.

The journal BMC Evolutionary Biology has classified the research article ?Telomere dynamics in a long-lived bird, the barnacle goose? as ?Highly Accessed?.

Coffee culture taking SA by storm - All4Women Food & Drink Articles

Coffee culture taking SA by storm

Photo ?: ? Kzenon - Fotolia.com

Coffee shops never seem to rest. Before most of the proletariat trundle into their offices to start the day, these coffee parlours are already wide awake.....

Cheery baristas serve up liquid gold

They are filled with whizzing, hissing, clinking noises and undecipherable chatting, as the team of unbelievably, refreshingly cheery baristas serve cups brimming with liquid gold to sometimes not-quite-awake patrons.

Coffee culture around the world

Coffee outlets are culturally important places. The greatest cities in the world enjoy vibrant and indelible coffee cultures: think New York with thousands of people walking down traffic-congested streets while clutching cups of Starbucks; Paris has its oft-praised cobbled-street caf?s.?

This seems to indicate the two extremes that exist under the umbrella term ?coffee culture? ? New York?s highly frenetic approach to the consumption of coffee, and Paris?s more relaxed enjoyment of the beverage.

Aromatic backdrop for life

A welcoming coffee house provides a venue and an aromatic backdrop for business meetings, first dates and reunions.?

It offers a place in which to dream up your next big idea, or to pen chapters for the novel you always promised yourself you would write.?

It presents a place away from the office in which to work, or perhaps even a place to which to escape the busy day for an hour or so.?

New environment boosts creativity?

Businesspeople have caught onto the idea that creatives have long-since espoused: that working in an environment different to the one in which you usually work allows you to gain a fresh perspective on old problems.?

A change of work environment imbues even those who are difficult to inspire with renewed vigour and passion.

Communal melting pot

The secret of coffee houses is their emphasis on community.?

Even though people are sitting in groups of two or four, those sitting in a coffee shop at any one time form an energetic community whose members are all passionate about different things.?

The term ?melting pot? has never been used so accurately as when describing coffee houses.?

Students occupy the same space as CEOs, entrepreneurs share the space with writers, painters, yoga devotees, photographers, philosophers, industrial engineers and estate agents.

Find your favourite coffee house?? Andres Rodriguez - Fotolia.com

To be able to find your favourite coffee house, it is important that it strikes a balance between the New York-styled coffee culture, and the Parisian-styled coffee culture.?

One is thus able to rush in and pick up a cup of coffee before dashing into the office or hurrying to a business meeting.?

But one can also amble into the fragrant venue with the aim to finding a quiet corner in which to spend time with oneself while sipping a latte and watching people rush in and drift out, coffee in hand, invigorated and inspired.

Fun coffee facts

? Both the American Revolution and the French Revolution were plotted in coffee houses.

? The average coffee drinker consumes 4-6kg of roasted coffee per annum; South Africans only consume 0,6kg per person per annum.

? Arabica beans contain half the caffeine of Robusta

? In 1675 Charles II, King of England issued a proclamation banning Coffee Houses. He stated Coffee Houses were places where people met to plot against him.

? Coffee starts out as a yellow berry, changes into a red berry and then is hand-picked to harvest. Through a water-soaking process, the red berry is de-shelled and left inside is the green coffee bean. This bean then dries in the sun for 3-5 days and is then packed and ready for sale.

Facebook Messenger iOS app enables free calling feature for UK users

Facebook Messenger iOS app adds free calling feature for UK users

While Americans and Canadians have enjoyed making app-based voice calls to their Facebook contacts since January, their overseas buddies have missed out -- until now. The social network's iOS Messenger app has just doled out the calling feature to the UK and potentially other parts of Europe too, although we haven't yet been able to confirm exactly how far and wide the update reaches. It's worth noting that the feature isn't enabled on the Android iteration yet, either. The new calling service isn't powered by Skype this time, although it works in a similarly uncomplicated way, with the ability to leave voice messages with any busy users. According to Pocket-lint, this is an experimental version, warning that you might experience a few bugs and glitches as you play around with it, but hey, you're getting free calls to (most of) your friends, barring any data charges. We've tested the new feature and it's working for several of our UK editors over both WiFi and 3G, but if you haven't already picked up the messaging app yet, you can grab it at the source below.

Mother of Colorado shooting-spree suspect says son was a compassionate kid

The evidence appears to be mounting that a Colorado prison parolee, killed in a shootout this week in Texas, may have been involved in the brazen murder of the head of Colorado's prison system. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports.

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News

The mother of the man suspected of gunning down the top prisons official in Colorado says her son was a compassionate child who ?drifted into a dark period? after the death of his 16-year-old sister.

Jody Mangue wrote that her son, Evan Ebel, adored animals and walked up to the mentally ill in restaurants to engage them in conversation.

?He was full of energy, was funny and lit up a room,? she wrote in a posting on a website dedicated to the memory of the sister, Marin Ebel, who was killed in a car crash in January 2004.

Ebel, 28, is a suspect in the shooting death of Tom Clements, the head of the Colorado Department of Corrections, who was killed last Tuesday when he opened the front door of his home.

Ebel was killed Thursday after a wild chase and gunfight with sheriff?s deputies in Texas. He is also suspected in the killing of a Domino?s pizza delivery man outside Denver on March 17.

Mangue wrote that her son was already struggling before his sister?s death, but that the loss ?threw him over the edge.?

?His life deteriorated after that and he just became numb and lost his direction altogether,? she wrote. In the posting, she thanked friends and strangers who have offered her support since last week.

The Denver Post reported over the weekend that Ebel?s documented decline began in October 2003, when he pointed a gun at the head of an acquaintance and demanded cash.

In the spring of 2004, police told the newspaper, Ebel carjacked a stranger, pointed a gun at a woman and accidentally shot himself in two separate incidents, once in the stomach and once in the leg.

He was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty in the carjacking case and was paroled in January of this year.

Colorado Department of Corrections / Reuters

Evan Spencer Ebel in an undated Colorado booking photo.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, a friend of Ebel?s father, told CNN on Sunday that the suspect always ?just seemed to have this bad streak, a streak of cruelty and anger.?

Law enforcement officials have said Ebel was involved with a white supremacist prison gang, the 211 Crew, which outside groups say demands that some of its members commit crimes once they leave prison.

Mangue wrote that her son was his own person, not a follower.

Despite having been linked to white supremacists, she wrote, ?most white people in prison are automatically put in that category and sometimes forced to say they are even when they are not.?

Reuters contributed to this report.

Stocks extend losses as Cyprus euphoria fades?

Stocks added to their losses in choppy trading Monday, after the head head of the Eurogroup said the Cyprus rescue represented a new template for resolving euro zone banking problems and that other countries may have to restructure their banks.

Major averages opened higher as Wall Street initially cheered the last-minute bailout deal in Cyprus, pushing the S&P 500 within a point of touching its all-time closing high.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average turned lower, dragged by Caterpillar and Bank of America, shortly after hitting a fresh intraday high for the ninth time this month. The blue-chip index still remains on track for its best first-quarter percentage gain since 1998.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also erased their early gains. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, gained above 13.
