Turning Up The Heat And Cooling Down The Planet, Hot Hotels To Carbon Offset All Last Minute Hotel Bookings

hot_ss_allcotIn a move that puts a little heat on HotelTonight and the raft of other last-minute-hotel-booking apps, as well as possibly helping to cool down the planet,?Hot Hotels?is to?offset the carbon emissions associated with each hotel stay booked through its platform, free of charge to the user. Instead of passing on the cost directly, the Spanish startup is soaking up the expense of buying so-called 'carbon credits' out of the commission it already receives from the hotels whose empty rooms it helps sell.

Power Golf Training Program

"Here's How To End Your Frustration, Maximize Your Golf Potential, And Be The Top Dog In Your Foursome..." "...Your Golf Swing Will Have Effortless Power....Producing Amazingly Long And Straight Drives That Blow By Your Golfing Buddies By 30 Yards On Every Hole" Dear Golfer, Can you imagine the look of pure horror on the faces of your golf buddies asyou unleash the sweetest drives and crank out one killer swing after another?... If you've taken lessons, bought the latest greatest equipment and your garage is filled with those crazy gimmick training aids... If you've tried the golf pros and the newest clubs and you still can't get those drives in the fairway, or that darn ball near the hole, this is the most important piece of information you'll ever read. Mike PedersenGolf Fitness Trainer My name is Mike Pedersen and over the past 9 years, through a long and painstakingprocess of trial, error and research, I've developed a sure-fire, 100% guaranteed program for adding yards to all your clubs and strokes off your scores based on the little-known golf secrets of touring pro's and elite players. I guarantee it and I've got the results to prove it! Can This Work For You? When Elwyn Roddick from the UK first bought my golf fitness book even I was skeptical about whether this program would work for a 71 year old with serious shoulder problems. But I was amazed when he wrote to me and told me his shoulder problem had cleared up and he'd won a Major Championship! "Your golf fitness program has worked wonderfully for my golf. My shoulder problem, which was horrendous, has now virtually cleared, all thanks to you and your golf exercises. I have now managed to win one of our major club competitions and considering the opposition, it was no mean feat!! I would recommend your program to any one of any age as at 71 years, I find it has been a wonderful revelation, and feel 10 years younger. Once, again many thanks." Elwyn Roddick, United Kingdom This Just Came In!! I got the below message via email just yesterday and was totally pumped to hear Mark's results and his enthusiasm for getting and staying in shape to play better golf. This makes it all worth while knowing fitness is the hardest sell on planet. "...beyond recognition!" "Hi Mike, Thought I d e-mail you following some recent events! I have been performing many of your exercises since I bought your Power Golf Training Program Ebook just under a year ago. From stretches to fitness ball to tubing to medicine ball I have managed to perform at least one golf exercise, if not a routine, most days since buying it. Even through a bad 3 to 4 months suffering the symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis! (All under control now!) A friend of mine paid myself and, unbeknown to him, yourself the ultimate compliment last week. We hadn t played golf together for over a year although we keep in touch regularly. I played my first ever round of golf with this guy about 15 years ago! Throughout the round, and in the clubhouse, he told me that he couldn t believe how well I was hitting the ball in terms of consistency and distance. He added that he has never seen me play like that and that it was the best he has ever seen me play since I took up the game. Prior to that I also picked up second spot in my Golf Society s first event of the year last month. Over the weekend I have had a chance to take stock and to review how far I have come since this time last year. My game is beyond recognition. Okay...so I have practiced my technique down at the range but not a great deal. No good having technique if you can t physically perform it. I can literally feel my improved flexibility in everyday life let alone on the course. My swing has now developed from a rigid 1/2 to 3/4 swing to a more fluid 3/4 plus swing. There s still a lot of room for improvement, but I ll keep on working at it. I now actually feel like a golfer instead of someone who just turns up to make up the numbers! Thanks for your help! It wouldn t have happened without buying your Ultimate Golf Fitness Guide! All the best, Mark." Mark Styles, Wickford, Essex, UK.xxxxx@blueyonder.co.uk ? Have You Taken Lessons Only To Be More Frustrated? I hear this one all the time... Golfers spending hundreds of dollars on lessons, only to be more confused than ever... and not being able to hit the ball at all! With this scenario, what'sleft? Do you take more lessons? Do you hit more balls? I'll bet you've already done that. Did it help? Be honest. I'm a straight shooter... and fessing up is the first step to ending the frustration and getting on the right track quickly. What the pros won't tell you is it's your BODY that's keeping you from an astonishingly high level of performance. "Thank you for your eletters. They are a real help. Just to share something with you.... I have been doing the golf exercise program in your ebook, and I can vouch for the extra distance that I am getting.( I have been playing golf from March 2005 and I used to hit my driver about 200 yards with difficulty. I can now hit about 250 yards consistently with the driver and my distance with the other clubs has increased as well).Just thought that I would share this with you. Cheers!" Chris Gregory, New Zealand You have certain physical capabilities. If your pro tells you to make a 90 degree shoulder turn and you can't... what does he tell you next? I can tell you it's to make some kind of "compensation" in your swing to make that shoulder turn. The result is less power, moremiss-hits and an even MORE complicated swing... that you can't repeat. The solution. All you needed to do was a simple stretch or strength movement to solve that particular problem. It's that easy! That's the way your golf improvement approach should be. Simple. Easy. With quick results. No more "band aid" swing adjustments that don't last. Just simple tips and techniques you can apply immediately and see results! "Greetings from Corpus Christi! Let me tell you...The Ultimate Golf Fitness Guide is the real deal! I have been in competitive sports since I was able to walk and have been through all sorts of training camps, but the immediate fruits of this e-book supercedes the hundreds of dollars one might spend for the sessions, which sometimes don't reveal the product until weeks or months down the road. I am addicted to golf because it is so challenging. My only fear is that the more I dedicate myself to this program, the easier the game will get. But I guess that is a good thing, huh? Once the frustration of the challenge is gone, what comes next...pure fun! I am excited and thankful for what you have developed for the amateur golfer."God Bless,Father Joseph Lopez, JCLCorpus Christi, TX P. S. I shot 8 strokes lower than my average that day. The Secret To Lower Scores and Longer DrivesIs All About Getting Your Body To Move Just A Little Better In fact... I'm so confident about the Ultimate Golf Fitness Guide... that I would go as far as saying even one of my simple golf stretches or golf exercises could increase your drives by up to 20 yards... almost overnight! The beauty of getting your body fit for golf... is you don't have to swing harder to hit it farther. In fact, you'll swing MUCH easier... and watch those tee shots blast down the middle of the fairway. Improve Your Game Quickly And Easily Now, for the first time ever, the same tips and techniques that have helped thousands of golfers all over the world dramatically improve their game is available to you in a single, information packed,e-book:" Introducing "Mike Pedersen's Power Golf Training Program:? This book contains all the information you'll ever need to instantly play your best golf! ? ? ? Name: Email: You've Gotta Read What A Respected AuthorAnd Instructor Of 25 Years Says... "I Recommend Mike's E-Book Unreservedly!" Mike Pedersen has done two different things very well: he has 1), written with authority, knowledge, and unquestionable expertise on how to get and to stay in shape specifically for golfers, and 2), he has done it in a pleasurable, easy-to-read, and crystal clear manner... The book is, first of all, very well organized--so you can start right from the beginning and take things at your own pace. Mike covers areas in addition to those you would expect, i.e., psychological factors, aging, motivation, enjoyment ...it is right there up front with the applicability to every step of a golf swing--from setup to the end of the swing--and the end of the whole round, for that matter. I recommend Mike's book unreservedly: it is the work of a true professional. All the more so given that its cost is the smallest fraction of the cost to obtain a personalized regimen, or compared to a few visits to a gym or health club. -George HibbardAuthor, Golf's Critical Detailswww.PerfectImpact.com Here's Just A Small Sample OfWhat You'll Discover: Why most golfers will never reach their potential and how you can quickly transform your game and leave them in your dust! I'll share with you the biggest secret to conditioning your muscles to do whatyou want them to do - one sweet killer swing after another. ? This is the well guarded secret to avoid those slices and hooks that send your ball wildly flying into the rough, sand traps and water hazards. "Mike Pedersen's Power Golf Training Program is right on the mark -- get the "core" in shape for strength, consistency, general health, avoidance of injury, and longevity in sport. And his e-book shows any golfer how to use the right exercises for rapid results. For putting, the "core" is also key to balance and accuracy, as in Tai Chi and Aikido. But perhaps more importantly, an intelligent exercise program leads to "chronic fitness," and chronic fitness underlies sound perceptual processes and strong mental skills in golf, and especially on the green. I highly recommend Mike's excellent fitness for golf program to every serious golfer." - Geoff MangumPutting Theorist and InstructorGeoff Mangum's PuttingZonehttp://puttingzone.comGolf's most advanced and comprehensive putting instruction. ? Who I Am And Why You Should Listen to Me There are lots of golf fitness books and programs, and dozens of people claiming to be experts. However, very few of these so-called "Golf Fitness Experts" practice what they preach or have the credentials and track record to back up their claims. Since you're probably wondering how this book is different, here's the whole story: I've been playing golf for over 20 years and know the golf swing "inside andout". If I were to do it all over, I'd still be a golf fitnesstrainer, but I'd also be an instructor. So when you came to me, I'd not only work on your swing mechanics, but your BODY too.I have played to a single digit handicap for the last 9 years. I've been involved in the fitness industry as a personal trainer and motivation coach for nearly 20 years. Golf and fitness is my life - it's all I've ever done. Enough listening to me talk... Here Are Some More CommentsFrom Golfers Just Like You... "I cannot stress how your program has improved my golf game. I've always been a runner and basketball player, but since I started your strength and flexibility program in March, my drive has gone from 230 to 250 yards and my irons have gained 10 yards in distance."Bruce Neerhof, Wisconsin "I would like to thank you in helping me improve my golf game. I started to use your program about 2 weeks ago and I am already seeing results. For example - I used to regularly drive the ball 260 yards - but within 1 week of using your stretching techniques - I have already seen a 10 yard increase in my driving. Once again thanks."Paul Merrick "My daughter is Chief of the Physical Therapy Program at our VA Medical Center and she is very impressed with the programs you are recommending. Congratulations!"Richard Hess, Oklahoma "I feel good about the program. I'm on the right track and the initial euphoria when it seems great falls away and you have to stay committed takes over! Thanks again for an excellent program. I believe it's a winner. Best regards from down under - we have great golfers!"Nigel, Australia "Well, since I started about a month ago - I've lost about 10lbs. I'm more flexible, and most importantly I've even shaved 3-5 shots off my game already. I'm already seeing results which drives me to do even more and improve my game."Orlando Imai, Texas "Mike, I started using your tips and techniques and all I can say is WOW!! I usually hit the ball long. But after just two days I out drove my buddy by 25 yards! But most important... I'm controlling the ball. New PGA president Ted Bishop is making it clear that his two-year term will not be a quiet one

Landon Nordeman / SI

Ted Bishop addressed some of the 27,000 members he serves at the 2013 PGA Merchandise Show, one of the organization's marquee events.

American golf is in an interesting, tense place, more so than you might realize, sitting at home on the Barcalounger, and it?s not because the U.S. lost the Ryder Cup again. The cause of the tension is that three men in critical leadership positions have competing agendas. One of them is Tim Finchem, the PGA Tour commissioner, who has been around forever and is signed up through 2016. Another is Mike Davis, the USGA executive director, an uncommonly measured man who came up through the USGA ranks and looks to have a long future at headquarters in Far Hills, in the heart of the Garden State?s horse country. Then there?s the third guy, Ted Bishop, the president of the PGA of America. He?s the outlier.

Bishop, more Hoosier than Larry Legend, is 59, healthy and energetic and living on borrowed time. He became president in November and he?ll serve, in accordance with his organization?s bylaws, one two-year term. Unlike Finchem and Davis, Bishop isn?t making a dime for this sometimes bruising gig. In the meantime he?s living large, golf-style. We?re talking nights at the Plaza Hotel, early morning snacks in the Today show green room, running a press ?conference on the 80th floor of the Empire State Building, long chats with Jack ?Nicklaus, being in the team room at the Ryder Cup, breaking bread with Mark Steinberg at the Links Club on the Upper East Side at a dinner hosted by Jerry Tarde of Golf Digest. Living large and loving life.

But when the clock strikes 12 at the PGA?s annual meeting in November 2014, Ted Bishop will again be able to devote all of his time to his day job, as owner-operator of a public 45-hole complex?the Legends Golf Club in Franklin, Ind.?where revenue is down, rounds are flat and the club?s Chapter?11 restructuring got a big write-up in The ?Indianapolis Star.

Finchem?s view of the world is shaped by what his bosses, the Tour players, want. He hasn?t said anything definitive about anchored putting because his players haven?t said anything definitive. Neither, for that matter, has the USGA. The comment period for the proposed 2016 ban concludes on Feb. 28, and the USGA and the R&A plan to make a final decision on the matter in the spring.

Davis?s view is shaped by what he and his colleagues feel are in the best long-term interests of the game, and that?s why they proposed the ban. The USGA, with the R&A conjoining, believes that a fundamental element of golf is a stroke played with two hands holding a club that swings freely. Yes, it took them nearly 25 years to finally come out and say it, but the Far Hillsers take a long-range view. The game has been played for 600 years and they?re planning for the next 600. Viewed that way, a 25-year ?mistake is barely a blip.

And then there?s Bishop. He?s an analytical man, a jocky wonk. His Tom Watson file, which he assembled to successfully make the case that Watson should be named the 2014 U.S. Ryder Cup captain, has about 70 sheets of paper in it. It is loaded with handwritten data assembled by Bishop and includes summaries of interviews, some of them amazingly direct, that deal with issues like Watson?s history as a drinker (he has stopped) and how involved Hilary Watson would most likely be as the Captainess (more so than Robin Love, who did her work behind the curtain, and less so than Lisa Pavin, who practically stole that soggy 2010 Ryder Cup).

Bishop thinks anchored putting is good for golf, though he is neither a belly man nor a broomsticker himself. He came to golf after years of schoolboy baseball and basketball, he can break 80 on a hard course from the back tees and he uses an elongated putter without anchoring. Bishop says he has heard Davis talk about USGA polling that has shown that golf?s inherent challenge is the single-most appealing thing about the game. Bishop dismisses that. He believes people find golf too challenging, and that is one of the biggest impediments to growing the game.

Despite his personal support for anchoring, Bishop wanted to have a position on the proposed ban that the PGA of America could present and defend publicly. So he did like the pols do. He ordered a poll, a do-it-yourself job.

On the day before Thanksgiving the 27,000 men and women PGA professionals received an e-mail signed by Bishop with this message:

?The PGA recognizes and respects the critical role the USGA plays in writing and interpreting the Rules of Golf and understands that the Rules are a fundamental aspect of the game we all serve. However, we also recognize that our roughly 27,000 PGA professionals are on the front lines of the game and that the PGA exists, in large part, to grow the game.?

From there the pros were invited to put a check beside one of the following two sentences:

??I would favor a ban on anchoring a golf club.?
??I would not favor a ban on anchoring a golf club.

By the Sunday after Thanksgiving the results had been tallied: 4,200 pros responded (about 16%) and roughly two thirds of them opposed the ban. Would George Gallup have signed off on the wording? Probably not, not with that leading-the-witness ?preamble. Is the sample big enough? Hard to say. Still, Bishop took it as a major indicator of where his men and women stood. It was a ?tipping point.

Lakers Edge Hornets 111-106: Kobe Bryant Continues To Rack Up Assists In Third Straight Win (VIDEO)

LOS ANGELES ? Dwight Howard scored 24 points, Kobe Bryant had 14 points and 11 assists in another pass-first performance, and the Los Angeles Lakers hung on to beat the New Orleans Hornets 111-106 Tuesday night for their first three-game winning streak in five weeks.

Earl Clark had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Lakers, whose 18-point lead with 5 1/2 minutes to play dwindled to 102-101 with 2 minutes left before Clark and Steve Nash hit big shots to clinch Los Angeles' ninth straight win over New Orleans.

Eric Gordon scored 18 of his 25 points in the first half for the Hornets, who were all but finished before making a 16-2 run in an electric 2 1/2-minute stretch. New Orleans got within one point on Greivis Vasquez's running jumper, but Clark hit an inside layup and Nash buried a 3-pointer with 1:21 to play.

Steve Nash had 12 points and five assists, while Antawn Jamison scored 16 points. Four-time All-Star Pau Gasol had seven points, seven rebounds and seven assists as a reserve in the Lakers' final home game before a seven-game trip, their longest of the season, while the Grammy Awards take over Staples Center.

Ryan Anderson scored 11 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter for the Hornets, who had won eight of 12, including an impressive victory in Memphis two nights earlier at the start of their five-game trip. Anderson, Vasquez and Robin Lopez led the impressive late rally that just fell short, with Lopez finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Rookie Anthony Davis had 18 points for the Hornets, who haven't beaten the Lakers at Staples Center since January 2009.

Steve Blake had two points and four assists in his first appearance for the Lakers since Nov. 11.

Until the frantic finish that nearly scrambled three solid quarters by the Lakers, Bryant reached new heights in his revamped role as Los Angeles' playmaker, racking up 10 assists in three straight games for just the fifth time in his career and the first time in four years. The fifth-leading scorer in NBA history has 39 assists in the Lakers' last three games, the biggest three-game total of his 17-season career.

Bryant also had eight rebounds, falling just short of a triple-double for the third straight game.

Two days after beating Oklahoma City in impressive fashion, the Lakers got right back to their improved form in the first half, holding the Hornets scoreless for 7:41 spanning the first two quarters with a 17-0 run. New Orleans helped out by missing multiple open shots, but Los Angeles used superior ball movement and an alert offensive game from Howard, who even made five of his six free throws in the first half ? not bad for a 49.5-percent shooter at the line.

Los Angeles made another 15-2 run short before the first half ended. Gordon kept the Hornets close with five 3-pointers but his teammates were a combined 10 for 36 from the field.

Blake had missed the Lakers' past 37 games with an abdominal injury that required surgery and resulting groin problems, but coach Mike D'Antoni immediately put the veteran point guard back in his rotation as Nash's backup. D'Antoni had coveted Blake's services in his previous NBA stops in Phoenix and New York, periodically trying to acquire the guard to run his point guard-intensive offense.

NOTES: The Hornets' brutal road trip began in Tennessee and will eventually take them to Minnesota for their fourth game in five nights on Saturday. They'll be at Utah on Wednesday night. ... The Lakers missed four free throws in less than 1 second of clock time midway through the third quarter. After Howard missed two, Gasol grabbed the rebound and got fouled without the clock moving ? but Gasol then missed two as well. Clark collected that rebound, but threw it past Bryant for a backcourt violation. ... Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka watched the game from courtside with her boyfriend, LMFAO's Redfoo.

New look at cell membrane reveals surprising organization

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Sight would dramatically alter a blind man's understanding of an elephant, according to the old story. Now, a look directly at a cell surface is changing our understanding of cell membrane organization.?

Using a completely new approach to imaging cell membranes, a study by researchers from the University of Illinois, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the National Institutes of Health revealed some surprising relationships among molecules within cell membranes.

Led by Mary Kraft, a U. of I. professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, the team published its findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Cells are enveloped in semi-permeable membranes that act as a barrier between the inside and outside of the cell. The membrane is mainly composed of a class of molecules called lipids, studded with proteins that help regulate how the cell responds to its environment.

"Lipids have multiple functions serving as both membrane structure and signaling molecules, so they regulate other functions inside the cell," Kraft said. "Therefore, understanding how they're organized is important. You need to know where they are to figure out how they're doing these regulatory functions."

One widely held belief among cell biologists is that lipids in the membrane assemble into patches, called domains, that differ in composition. However, research into how lipids are organized in the membrane, and how that organization affects cell function, has been hampered by the lack of direct observation. Although the cell membrane is heavily studied, the imaging techniques used infer the locations of certain molecules based on assumed associations with other molecules.

In the new study, Kraft's team used an advanced, molecule-specific imaging method that allowed the researchers to look at the membrane itself and map a particular type of lipid on mouse cell membranes. The researchers fed lipids labeled with rare stable isotopes to the cells and then imaged the distribution of the isotopes with high-resolution imaging mass spectrometry.

Called sphingolipids (SFING-go-lih-pids), these molecules are thought to associate with cholesterol to form small domains about 200 nanometers across. The direct imaging method revealed that sphingolipids do indeed form domains, but not in the way the researchers expected.

The domains were much bigger than suggested by prior experiments. The 200-nanometer domains clustered together to form much larger, micrometer-sized patches of sphingolipids in the membrane.

"We were amazed when we saw the first images of the patches of sphingolipids across the cell surface," said Peter Weber, who directed the team at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. "We weren't sure if our imaging mass spectrometry method would be sensitive enough to detect the labeled lipids, let alone what we would see."

Furthermore, when the researchers looked at cells that were low on cholesterol -- thought to play a key role in lipid aggregation -- they were surprised to find that the lipids still formed domains. On the other hand, disruption to the cell's structural scaffold seemed to dissolve the lipid clusters.

"We found that the presence of domains was somewhat affected by cholesterol but was more affected by the cytoskeleton -- the protein network underneath the membrane," Kraft said. "The central issue is that the data are suggesting that the mechanism that's responsible for these domains is much more complicated than initially expected."

In addition, the new study found that sphingolipids domains were incompletely associated with a marker protein that researchers have long assumed dwelled where sphingolipids congregated. This means that data collected with imaging techniques that target this protein are not as accurate in representing sphingolipid distribution as previously thought.

"Our data are showing that if you want to know where sphingolipids are, look at the lipid, don't infer where it is based on other molecules, and now there's a way to directly image them," said Kraft, who also is affiliated with the department of chemistry at the U. of I.

Next, the researchers plan to use the direct-imaging method in conjunction with other more conventional methods, such as fluorescence, to further determine the organization of different kinds of molecules in the membrane, their interactions and how they affect the cell's function. They plan to begin by targeting cholesterol.

"Cholesterol abundance is important," Kraft said. "You change that, you tremendously change cell function. How is it organized? Is it also in domains? That's related to the question, what's the mechanism responsible for these structures and what are they doing?"

The National Institutes of Health, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the National Science Foundation and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund supported this work. Co-author Joshua Zimmerberg directed research at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, part of the National Institutes of Health.
