The Academic Side of Love ? Missouri State Magazine - Missouri ...

Why do people want to fall in love?

Humans have basic needs for affection and connections, Wood said, and healthy romantic relationships can meet those needs. Whipple thinks love has a basis both in science and in cultural norms. Theories about love in evolutionary psychology focus mainly on biology and propagation of the species, Whipple said, while other theories look at cultural expectations and socialization.

Why may people have lifelong committed relationships when many other species do not?

Whipple said an area of the brain called the frontal lobe is more evolved in humans than in many other species. This area allows us to have a wide spectrum of emotions and allows us to bond deeply, plan things and understand social behavior ? all parts of dating and romance.

Why is college a common time to fall in love?

Proximity: Both experts say we?re more likely to fall for someone we see on a regular basis, and college throws lots of people together.

Similarity: Both say ?birds of a feather flock together? rings more true than ?opposites attract? when it comes to lasting love. People in college can easily find others with similar ambitions, values, interests, etc., due to classes, clubs and social gatherings.

Developmental aspects: Wood says college students are constructing their own identities, and relationships help them clarify and confirm those identities. College is also a time when people may be more willing to disclose intimate information, a bonding activity that can lead to love. Whipple also said college students are at an age when some of them just naturally think about dating in a more serious way.

Intensity: College is a time of heightened experiences, which can bond people whether they are dating, friends, roommates, etc.

What happens in our brains and bodies when we fall in love?

Whipple said parts of the brain get fired up during the early stage ? the same parts that fire when people are addicted to other substances. You get a rush of ?feel-good? hormones including dopamine, vasopressin, adrenaline and oxytocin, making you almost ?addicted? to your partner. During this phase, your body is more able to deal with missed sleep and the worries that can come from dating.

Wood said it?s also common to see couples at the start of a relationship unconsciously begin to match each other?s body language ? if one person leans in or tilts his or her head, the other might as well. ?That means they?re really engaged with one another.?

What?s the difference between the honeymoon phase and longer-lasting love?

Whipple said the honeymoon stage could last for up to two years. That doesn?t mean the brain is firing those hormones all that time, just that this period is intense and people are on their best behavior.

Whipple said the next stage is what she calls real love. ?Real love ? requires action. The romantic love doesn?t require action. It?s easy; it?s effortless. It?s falling in love ? you can?t will that to happen. Real love is when you act in a loving manner even when you don?t necessarily feel loving.? The hormones lose ground and the brain can make a conscious decision to be committed ? or back out of a relationship that isn?t working.

During this stage, you should not feel anxious about where you two stand and you can begin a deeper connection in which you fully trust your partner and can be your true self with him or her.

How can long-term couples maintain a passionate relationship?

?Do fun things!? Whipple said. She recommends date nights and trying new things together because spontaneous or exciting experiences can produce hormones similar to the ones released early in a relationship. If you can?t go out for a date, at least ?make sure you come together and talk about your day,? Whipple said. ?And that does not mean you talk about work or you talk about the kids! ? Talk about hopes, dreams, desires.?

Wood also recommends positive communication. She quoted research that has found couples who stay together tend to have a 5-to-1 or better ratio of positive-to-negative exchanges. For every act of criticism, defensiveness or anger, it takes about five compliments, affectionate touches, smiles or similar to rebalance the relationship. ?I tell people who are looking to stay in love, (you) just need to be nice to (your) partner!? She says couples who last understand and accept each other?s fighting styles, learn to pick their battles and always stay open to making the relationship better.

Parents are happier people

ScienceDaily (May 17, 2012) ? Contrary to recent scholarship and popular belief, parents experience greater levels of happiness and meaning in life than people without children, according to researchers from the University of California, Riverside, the University of British Columbia and Stanford University. Parents also are happier during the day when they are caring for their children than during their other daily activities, the researchers found in a series of studies conducted in the United States and Canada.

These findings appear in a paper -- "In Defense of Parenthood: Children Are Associated With More Joy Than Misery" -- which will be published in a forthcoming issue of Psychological Science, the flagship journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

"We are not saying that parenting makes people happy, but that parenthood is associated with happiness and meaning," explained Sonja Lyubomirsky, professor of psychology at UC Riverside and a leading scholar in positive psychology. "Contrary to repeated scholarly and media pronouncements, people may find solace that parenthood and child care may actually be linked to feelings of happiness and meaning in life."

Paper co-authors are S. Katherine Nelson, a doctoral candidate at UCR; Kostadin Kushlev, a doctoral candidate at UBC; Tammy English, a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford; and Elizabeth W. Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC.

The findings are among a new wave of research that suggests that parenthood comes with relatively more positives, despite the added responsibilities. The study also dovetails with emerging evolutionary perspectives that suggest parenting is a fundamental human need.

Recent popular accounts have painted a portrait of unhappy parents who find little joy in taking care of their children, "but the scientific basis for these claims remains inconclusive," the researchers wrote.

"If you went to a large dinner party, the parents in the room would be just as happy or happier than the guests without children," Dunn said.

The researchers conducted three studies that tested whether parents are happier overall than their childless peers, if parents feel better moment-to-moment than nonparents, and whether parents experience more positive feelings when taking care of children than during their other daily activities.

The consistency of their findings across all three studies "provides strong evidence challenging the widely held perception that children are associated with reduced well-being.

Among the findings:

  • Parents are happier when taking care of their children than while doing other daily activities.
  • Fathers in particular expressed greater levels of happiness, positive emotion and meaning in life than their childless peers. This finding requires further study, Dunn noted, adding that "the pleasures of parenthood may be offset by the surge in responsibility and housework that arrives with motherhood."
  • Older and married parents tend to be the happiest. "Our findings suggest that if you are older (and presumably more mature) and if you are married (and presumably have more social and financial support), then you're likely to be happier if you have children than your childless peers," Lyubomirsky said. "This is not true, however, for single parents or very young parents."

As Dunn put it, "These findings suggest that parents are not nearly the miserable creatures that we might expect from recent studies and popular representations."

Best illusions of 2012: The Exorcist illusion

MacGregor Campbell, consultant

Here's a freaky twist on a classic illusion.

Thomas Papathomas, a vision researcher at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, has created a new variation on the hollow-mask illusion - where viewers find it difficult to distinguish whether they are seeing a mask's interior or its exterior.

Papathomas's version uses both a hollow mask and a hollow torso, each inverted from the other so that when the head is concave, the torso is convex, and vice-versa. As the torso and head rotate, in the same direction, they appear to rotate oppositely to one another, resulting in the head appearing to twist unnaturally.

Papathomas calls this the "Exorcist Illusion," referring to a famous scene in the 1973 horror movie, The Exorcist, in which a girl possessed by the devil twists her head around a full 360 degrees.

This illusion requires no satanic involvement however. A constantly rotating hollow mask - or torso - appears to rotate in one direction when the exterior is facing the viewer, and the opposite direction when the interior faces the viewer. Since the brain and the torso are inverted from one another, when one appears to rotate clockwise, the other seems to rotate anticlockwise.

Papathomas created this illusion for the Neural Correlate Society's 2012 Illusion of the Year contest.

Cash Advance Loans & Payday Loans | Sharing Reviews & Advices

GET Cash Till PAYDAY! . . . $100 OR Far more . . . Quickly.? The advertisements are on the radio, tv, the Web, even in the mail. They refer to money advance loans or a payday loan ? which come at a very high cost.

Check cashers, finance companies and other people are creating modest, short-term, high-rate loans that go by a selection of names: payday loans, cash advance loans, check advance loans, post-dated check loans or deferred deposit check loans.

Typically, a borrower writes an individual check payable to the lender for the amount he or she wishes to borrow plus a fee. The business offers the borrower the amount of the check minus the fee. Charges charged for cash advance loans or a payday loan are usually a percentage of the face worth of the check or a fee charged per quantity borrowed ? say, for every single $50 or $100 loaned. If you extend or ?roll-more than? the loan ? say for another two weeks ? you will spend the charges for every single extension.

Below the Truth in Lending Act, the price of payday loans ? like other sorts of credit ? ought to be disclosed. Amongst other information, you ought to get, in writing, the finance charge (a dollar quantity) and the annual percentage rate or APR (the price of credit on a yearly basis). Loans secured by a personal check ? such as a payday loan ? is quite high-priced credit. Let?s say you write a personal check for $115 to borrow $100 for up to 14 days. The check casher or payday lender agrees to hold the check till your subsequent payday. At that time, depending on the specific program, the lender deposits the check, you redeem the check by paying the $115 in cash, or you roll-more than the check by paying a fee to extend the loan for yet another two weeks.

In this example, the price of the initial loan is a $15 finance charge and 391 percent APR. If you roll-over the loan three occasions, the finance charge would climb to $60 to borrow $100.Exactly where to Complain If you feel your lender has violated the law, you may possibly wish to get in touch with the lender or loan servicer to register your issues.

New MacBook rumors: Retina displays, USB 3.0 and more

11 hrs.

Next month will supposedly bring a new line of MacBooks to eager laptop buyers around the world, but it won't be the modest spec bumps of the last few years. This year's crop is rumored to be carry major improvements in just about every aspect. A few recent additions to the rumor pile make it worth taking a moment to review just exactly what we may?expect come mid-June.

  • Display: The new MacBooks will supposedly be graced by "Retina" style high-resolution?displays. Reports as early as December suggested 2880x1800 pixels would be the magic number ? exactly twice the current resolution of the 15-inch MacBook Pro. The MacBook Air is supposed to get this upgrade as well, according to the latest gossip. Such displays will be a powerful feature to list, but they also present engineering challenges in both hardware and software.
  • Graphics: To support animations and 3-D graphics on the new high-resolution screens, an improved graphics chipset will be required. Not surprisingly,9to5Mac??discovered references in the latest version of OS X to NVIDIA's GeForce GT 650M chip, which is a powerful integrated GPU ??as opposed to discrete, like a graphics card.
  • Processor: Intel's latest CPUs and boards, known as Ivy Bridge, should come standard on the new laptops. They're faster than last year's models, of course, and also should have significant power savings.
  • Design: The Pro series (if it retains that name) should be getting a serious facelift, gaining more Air-like design but shedding (as that series has done) several features in order to get it. No numbers have surfaced, but by eliminating a few ports and the optical drive, the thickness of the laptop can likely be reduced by a quarter or more. Saved space will also make room for more battery.
  • Storage: Having all flash memory, like an iPhone or MacBook Air, won't satisfy the power users who need terabytes of storage space for high-definition movies and such like ? and it's expensive, to boot. But there may be flash to boot with:Bloomberg describes the new laptops as having?flash storage for system and critical files, so booting will be faster. Large and seldom-used files will be written to a normal spinning drive.
  • Other:?USB 3.0 is supposed to arrive on Macs at last, perhaps due to its inclusion on the newest Intel boards. There will likely also be some smaller changes: the removal of the Ethernet port, for instance and replacing the power button on the keyboard where the now-defunct "eject" button would have been, as on the Air.

None of these are confirmed, of course, but none of them are particularly outlandish, either. Chances are that most of them will be present in some form, though some may cost extra, such as the boot-accelerating flash storage. And more may appear before the rumored release period around June 11 at Apple's?Worldwide Developers Conference.
