During her training, she also interned with David Nicholas International, Inc. to perfect her makeup artist skills. After graduating from Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics in 2003, her goal was to open her own business, specializing in skin care and makeup artistry. So she applied to the state for her salon license and received it in August of 2004. This was actually a big risk at the time. The economy was not good and she only had evening clients, despite her efforts. She had renovated her home to open her business, but her home was located on a dead end street. She still needed daytime clients. Her previous training in the corporate world helped her to strategize. Since she couldn?t rely on people driving by her home and finding her business, she needed to network. So she joined a local group in her city, joined the Chamber of Commerce and volunteered by doing makeup at charity functions. She did whatever she could to get the exposure she needed in her community.
She didn?t stop there! She wanted to build her bridal makeup business, so she got involved with doing makeup for magazines and runway shows throughout New England. Grace Ormonde Wedding Style magazine gave her a great opportunity doing makeup for the models at their Grand Bridal Show. Later, the magazine used Joanne during a photo shoot and one of the images of her work made the cover. Since then, her work has been featured in several more publications. She has established relationships with photographers and other vendors, which has helped in building her business.
Advertising was also key. Since she knew advertising was typically expensive for new businesses, she had to think of creative solutions to get her name and business out there.? She initiated a ?send a friend? program in her skin care and makeup business. She also started using the Constant Contact email marketing service and social media. She carries her business card with her at all times.
With all of this work, her education still didn?t stop. Joanne says ?I am a firm believer in continuing education.? Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics taught her that there is always more to learn, no matter what your career may be. She attended post graduate classes at the Institute on the biology of the skin, peel techniques, microdermabrasion and threading. She also attended workshops at various trade shows and product companies throughout the country. Lastly, she joined professional associations as a way to find job opportunities while learning and improving upon her skills.
Her hard work paid off. Today, she is a successful business owner and extremely happy with her career. She averages 55 bridal parties per year. She has an average of 250 regular skin care and makeup clients combined, as well as additional clients who come to her for some pampering. Her skin care specialties are microdermabrasion, peels, facial hair removal, brow shaping and threading. Her makeup specialties include bridal, special events and providing lessons. She also sells makeup and skin care and she custom blends makeup.
One piece of advice that she keeps in mind from her education at Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics is to ?always practice great customer service.? Customers return to Joanne because they trust her and look to her as a source of knowledge while providing great service. As for who inspires her? She speaks highly of David Nicholas, who has been a mentor and friend and instilled the love of makeup artistry in her. She also looks to the makeup artists in her professional association group as a constant source of inspiration. She is motivated by all the ?greats? in the skin care and makeup business. She has read books and practiced the techniques of her industry idols.
She has several tips for current Catherine Hinds students. She recommends reading as much as possible in your chosen field. An instructor once had her class carry a notebook and take notes about everything from ingredients to procedures to techniques and anything else they wanted to explore further. She says ?I still do that?only electronically.? She recommends practicing great customer service skills just as she learned at Catherine Hinds. Focus completely on the client in front of you and make them the center of your attention and be dependable. ?Leave your ego at the door.? If there are parts of your business that you are unfamiliar with, such as budget or marketing, then get help from reliable sources. Better yet, take some business classes or work with an association like ASCP. Establish good relationships with vendors. She notes that ?a bride is more likely to hire you if their photographer or wedding planner refers you to them.?
?Stay healthy, be a power of example and PAY IT FORWARD.? She certainly practices all of this. She started a chapter of the ?Look Good Feel Better? program, which is sponsored by the American Cancer Society at her local hospital. It is her way of giving thanks for this second chance at a wonderful life.
Her second chance started at Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics. ?I firmly believe I would not be enjoying this wonderful life without my experience at Catherine Hinds.?
