Independent Russian election watchdog faces probe (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russia's main independent election watchdog says prosecutors are investigating it on suspicion of election law violations ? just three days before the parliamentary vote.

Andrei Buzin of Golos said Thursday the group has been accused of breaking the law by publishing party polls after legal deadlines.

Golos' web site collects and displays complaints of election law violations throughout Russia. It counts more than 4,500 entries. Most involve Russian leader Vladimir Putin's United Russia party, which dominates the country's politics.

Buzin described the authorities' move as a "usual trick to get us distracted from our work at the most inconvenient time."

The prosecutor's office in the Meshchansky district declined to comment.
