SLAM has been ramping up its activity over the past few weeks, but the public campaigning has only been the tip of the iceberg. We have been extremely busy in the background collecting a mountain of evidence and conducting talks with our lawyers. The outcome of all this work is that we are very confident that Surrey County Council has fallen short in its obligations as a public library service provider regarding its plans to implement volunteer-run libraries. And ? ?even though we would much rather it not come to this ? we are ready to take legal action to stop the Council?s library plans.
But we need help. As you can imagine, taking legal action is not cheap and, in addition to conducting a campaign to raise a ?fighting fund?, we also need to apply for legal aid (on the basis that the case is in the broader public interest). The Government has clamped down on legal aid over the last couple of years making the eligibility criteria more stringent.
We need your help today
We need someone to come forward that qualifies for legal aid and that would be willing to be involved in the legal action. The level of involvement in preparation for the case is discretionary: we are more than prepared to do all the work necessary and we will fully protect the person, but if the person wants to be more involved then we are certainly happy to work in any way that the person is comfortable with.
Legal aid criteria basically comes down to how much capital a person holds (the limit is currently ?8,000).
If you think you may be able to help, or know someone who may be able to help, please contact us using the Contact Us tab leaving your phone number and/or email address and we will contact you today to discuss.
