The Ministry of Information, Broadcasting, Telecommunications, Science and Technology in partnership with telecommunications company LIME launched the Technology for Education 20/20 programme in Barbuda on Wednesday.

St. John?s Antigua- Principal of the Sir McChesney George Secondary School John Mussington said high speed laptops presented on Wednesday to teachers will bolster the school?s information communication technology programme.

The 15 on-staff teachers at the secondary school were among the 38 who received the laptops under the Technology for Education 20/20 programme backed by government and telecoms company LIME. The other beneficiaries are from the Holy Trinity Primary School.

Mussington, who was among those who addressed the ceremony where the programme was launched, explained its significance at the school that has 112 students.

?What it means is that teachers in Barbuda are now on board and so they will be able to gain the tools and the skills necessary for them to deliver the curriculum,? he told The Daily OBSERVER.

?What has to be noted is that the responsibility is ours as teachers to train the upcoming generation and prepare them for the information age and we can only do so if we ourselves are on the cutting edge, as it were, and we are well equipped to be able to pass on that knowledge.?

The Technology for Education programme has three components ? high-speed laptops for 1600 teachers at 86 public and private primary and secondary schools, broadband Internet connectivity at their homes at a special rate and broadband Internet hotspots in 22 secondary schools.

Just over a thousand laptops have been distributed to teachers in Antigua so far since the 2011 launch.
