Marlene Dumas?is a painter, artist and teacher, born in South Africa 58 years ago, where she grew up and studied before she moved to Amsterdam in the late 1970?s where she lives and works to date. Her works display different stages or moments in a humans life, e.g. racism, sexuality, birth, death etc. After studying and acquiring a degree in Fine Art at the University of Cape Town, she was awarded a 2 year scholarship in 1776 to study abroad, at the Ateliers Institute, Amsterdam in The Netherlands.

During her years of study, she was greatly influenced by the work of another artist?s (Diane Arbus) photography, which caused her to desire to represent the human figure in a way that would represent and expose matters related to sexual, social and racial identity. She also studied Psychology at the University of Amsterdam.

She gets her portrait subjects from people?s personal photographs and images from Newspapers and Magazines. She reproduces and paints the images she collects in a different and unique way to bring out a particular story. Her trademark style is visible throughout her work, although no two pieces are the same. They usually bring out the human figure or face in a dramatic alignment, removed from a background that is mostly neutral. Her portraits are so very moving due to the authenticity with which she depicts real experiences of real people. To illustrate, her Cover Up portrait of 1994 portrayed an exposed child with clothes above and covering the head. This brings awareness of the violence and sexual exploitation that children are exposed to.

This great painter, uses different styles of painting and colours and you do not have to look hard to understand what message a particular portrait intends to pass across. Her aim is to move onlookers to awareness regarding all aspects of life. Sometimes, she may choose to bring out the story in the background of a photograph, instead of the photo itself. The emotions of her subjects are illustrated through colour. Some people are not overly comfortable with her paintings and portraits while others simply love them. Some people are not overly comfortable with her paintings and portraits while others simply love them. Some people are not overly comfortable with her paintings, because they are mostly nude portraits of the human form, while others simply love them.
