Liaisons for Departments, Labs and Centers (LDLC)
(Librarian I or II, HALF-TIME)
The MIT Libraries seek a forward-looking and enterprising professional to shape and deliver programs of reference, instruction, outreach and collection to MIT?s social science and management communities and to serve as a liaison to an active Political Science Department with students, faculty and researchers at the leading edge of research and education.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Manager, LDLC and Coordinator of the Social Sciences and Management Community of Practice, the Social Sciences and Management Librarian provides reference support and instruction to the Political Science, MIT Sloan School of Management, and Economics communities and provides general reference in social science fields. Acting as the Libraries expert on the research and learning culture and practices of the Political Science Department, the Librarian selects and advocates for research materials, services and collections that serve the needs of the community in collaboration with appropriate groups and colleagues and with vendors. S/he monitors and supports interdisciplinary activities of the community, participates in user needs studies, and identifies possible topics for new studies. As liaison to the community, the Librarian targets communications for creating awareness of available services and collections and actively works to maintain and build connections. S/he seeks out and channels feedback from the community to the Libraries for subsequent improvement and evolution of services. The Librarian provides support for strategic scholarly publishing activities recruits faculty authored research materials and promotes repository-based services. Collaborating with colleagues in the Social Sciences and Management Community of Practice, the librarian supports the interdisciplinary needs of his/her communities and shares knowledge in support of liaison activities. S/he will participate in system-wide initiatives and serve on appropriate committees and task forces. S/he will be expected to actively communicate with fellow professionals through research, writing or presentations, and/or professional service activities. The Librarian may coordinate the activities of a subject-area Community of Practice including providing forums to support liaison work, assisting with liaison goal setting and performance feedback, participating in the management team for LDLC, communicating MIT community needs to the library system, proposing and implementing work processes for liaisons, and collaborating with other groups.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required ? MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent advanced degree in library or information science. Background or at least one-year experience in political science, economics, or management science. An entrepreneurial approach to delivering service to a research community, particularly with regard to reference, instruction, or outreach, but also in identifying opportunities for new services. Knowledge, experience and/or capacity in providing services and collection development for a research community. Demonstrated interest and enthusiasm in developing and maintaining relationships with user communities. A collaborative approach to problem solving in service of user needs. Proven interest in research literature and publishing practices in political science or related fields. Independence and initiative in prioritizing and accomplishing liaison work. Facility, mastery, and independent exploration of appropriate technologies in service of user needs. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to work successfully with a diverse population and to exercise appropriate diplomacy and tact in working with a wide variety of customers. Preferred ? Advanced degree in political science, economics, or management. Deep understanding of the literature and information sources used within the social sciences, sufficient to provide high quality support to advanced students and researchers. Experience in working with data and other information formats in service to research needs. Experience or training in marketing, teaching or publishing. Experience selecting and assessing print and digital research collections. Experience working with vendors of scholarly research products. Evidence of effective collaboration with faculty, colleagues, and students.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: $51,000 is minimum entry-level salary for full-time equivalent ($25,500 for half-time). Actual salary and appointment level (Librarian/Archivist I or II) will depend on qualifications and experience.
